Good evening ladies and gentlemen, it has been a while since we posted on the group making it dormant but I promise you it wasn't no reason but for the better.

I liken the silent period to the interphase of development where the egg or zygote seems stagnant but in real sense a lot normally takes place in terms of nucleus replication.

Indeed we would have been silent even now but an idea came into my mind in terms of vaccines in Kenya. For your information, in the past few weeks, basic vaccinations have not been taking place in Kenya because of delayed vaccines in transit to Kenya.

In my mind I just wondered, how many people and children have been affected by lack of vaccines in our hospitals while we are living in this digital era of information sharing and my knowledge of many people who have the knowledge of vaccine development and medical biotechnology.

It is time for the sleeping giants to wake up and take their place in solving this serious issue not just for Kenya but for Africa and the world.

Your contribution in this call will make a difference.

For the Biotechnology stakeholders in Kenya, there is hope or let me say light at the end of the tunnel with the launch of Society of Professional Researchers in Biomedical Science (SPRBS) early in November 2023.

This is a body which will deal with regulations and licencing of Biomedical scientists in Kenya in collaboration with other parts of the world.

It is viewed as a big stride in medical research in Kenya as a big number of graduates from various research courses and institutions will now have a home and hope for jobs in research institutions with the help of the negotiating brother.

2019 to 2022 was an important year for the medical biotechnology fratanity in Kenya and the entire world. It was the period of the outbreak of and pandemic of Covid-19.
For us who had the biotechnology knowledge had alot of questions posted to us by our friends, colleagues and relatives concerning the emergence, the spread and even about the Covid-19 vaccine, of which we were glad to answer according to our understanding and we felt important during that time.
During this time I took a commercial break on opportunity hunt for the opportunity that I had waited for was here. I said to myself, now they will make a demand of us, now they will recognise our years of effort in school. And I know many of us did the same. But the sad truth this never happened in the Kenyan context.
We still have work of publicising this wonderful field and vocation for the betterment of our country's health systems

MALERIA RESPONSE IN KENYA

It is in this east African nation that a variety of preventive measures, tailored to meet the widely divergent needs of local populations. Because transmission is not the same across the whole country, each region has its own intervention package.

The country’s malaria response, led by the Ministry of Health, has evolved as accumulated evidence has shown the value of tailored interventions for specific locations.

The coastal areas near the Indian Ocean and the Lake Victoria region, for example, are high-burden, and malaria prevalence hovers around 8% and 27% respectively. Here insecticide-treated bed nets are the primary preventive tool whereas indoor spraying with insecticides is targeted towards selected areas with high transmission around Lake Victoria.

In the capital city of Nairobi, fewer than 1% of people harbor the parasite that causes malaria. The presence of the parasite is also low in the country’s arid regions, where it can peak at around 3% following heavy rains. Kenya’s malaria response in these areas focuses primarily on surveillance, effective diagnosis and treatment.

in addition, there are many institutions in Kenya that are involved in malaria research and prevention like the Kenya Medical Research institute, Walter reed research program, CDC Kenya among other institutions. This has helped to develop various preventive and treatment mechanisms for the disease hence reducing its threat in the country. Although research is still underway to contain the infection.

There is still divers topics to de explored under malaria infection in Kenya.

Common disease in Kenya

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevrntion in Kenya CDC, health challenges in Kenya include: high maternal and child mortality and a high burden of infectious diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria.
Tropical diseases, especially malaria and tuberculosis, have long been a public health problem in Kenya. In recent years, infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), also has become a severe problem in the country as noted in the wikipedia which also states that The burden of disease in Kenya has mainly been from communicable diseases but it is now shifting to also include the noncommunicable diseases and injuries.
In order to improve in our health status, the first step is to know the diseases affecting the country and to formulate important policies to takle each of these diseases. In the next weeks we will try to find out how the country is tackling these infections affecting the citizens.

Welfare of the community and society

Some weeks ago I had to visit one of our public hospitals in the country and to my disatisfaction , I decided to write this article to you my fellow comrades so that together we can deliberate on what we can do, to change the situation.
First of all I must confess that I am one of those who visits a pharmacy while feeling seek and this time around I had to provide a sick leave form to my employer in return to work and that is why I found myself making lines at the hospital.
Generally my complaint is not about the service providers at the hospital but about the service itself. The World Health organisation WHO, in an article hailing the emergence of the rapid diagnostic kits RDT Kits said that it is becoming unethical to do a Laboratory test to a patient which has to take a longer period like one hour whereas there are diagnostic kits which are able to give the same results at a much lower time like 15 minutes.
I had to wait for a lab result for at least one hour before the results for malaria test were out and luckily the result was negative and I was given a correct prescription for the disease. But what got me worried is the time I had to wait for the result, while having the knowledge of the Rapid Diagnostic kits for malaria which I witnessed their precision and faster diagnosis ability during my attachment at the Kenya Medical Research institute- Center for Global Health Research KEMRI-CGHR in 2016.
We already know the solution to the time factor in the diagnosis of some infections, I believe what we lack is the implementation of this medical innovations.
Increased time in diagnosis leads to more deaths among patients, considering how bacteria, viruses and parasites multiplies faster in the patients body within a short time and their devastating effects.
I believe the application of RDT kits and other faster detection techniques should gain increased use in the public and private hospitals to better the health of the society and the community. And to enable this their production in the country will be a big fire the country's health systems. Even though as recommended, the Gold leaf methods should also be incorporated in challenging cases.

IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH RECORDS
Health records and system is very important in every one’s life. Its process normally begins very early in life while a person is still in the mother’s womb. At this stage, pregnancy information is normally filled by the parents inside the clinic card. This information is very important to the person’s life and it should be done with utmost seriousness. And this is why both the expectant parents should attend during the first clinic session of the pregnancy.
The information collected during the first clinic visit includes the parents’ names, age, address and medical conditions of the parents and their family members among other information. The medical conditions information are normally asked so as to avoid or be prepared in advance for the baby’s health during and after birth. For there are a lot of genetic disorders which can be detected or anticipated during this process for example albinism, sickle cell anemia, and if the possibility of the couple having twins or triplet babies.
Another vital bit is the parents details recorded in the clinic card. This details are normally used during the processing of the person’s birth certificate. In case of omission of the fathers details in the clinic card and in the birth record at the maternity, in Kenya the person’s birth certificate will not include the father’s names or sir name. And this can be redone by both the parents visiting the ministry of interior, registration offices with original and copies of national Identification cards, the birth certificate to be corrected, the parents’ marriage certificate, the clinic card, and the properly filled forms provided by the ministry for the purpose.
And so it is very important to take the process of health systems very seriously to avoid the numerous cases of paternity issues brought to the ministry during the making of the birth certificate. For the birth certificate is used while applying for the schools, national examinations and in the application of the national identity cards and the passports by the citizens.
As it is important for resolving health issues throughout the life of a person. And in knowing the health history of the person.

GMOs
A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an animal, plant, or microbe whose DNA has been altered using genetic engineering techniques.
Conventional methods of modifying plants and animals—selective breeding and crossbreeding—can take a long time. Moreover, selective breeding and crossbreeding often produce mixed results, with unwanted traits appearing alongside desired characteristics. The specific targeted modification of DNA using biotechnology has allowed scientists to avoid this problem and improve the genetic makeup of an organism without unwanted characteristics tagging along.
Genetically modified animals are mainly used for research purposes, while genetically modified plants are common in today’s food supply.
concerns include the possibility of the genetically engineered foreign DNA spreading to non-GMO plants and animals. So far, none of the GMOs approved for consumption have caused any of these problems, and GMO food sources are subject to regulations and rigorous safety assessments.
