In 2013 Angelina Jolie authored an op-ed in The New York Times about her journey to reduce the likelihood of developing breast cancer. She underwent a preventive double mastectomy (both her breasts were removed surgically) She made this decision after having genetic tests done that confirmed she carried a BRCA1 gene mutation. She had an 87% chance of developing breast cancer and 50% chance of developing ovarian cancer. Her mother died from Ovarian cancer carrying the same gene. Jolie now lives freer with only a less than 5% chance of ever developing breast cancer.
