THE BETTER SCHOOLS INITIATIVE (PROGRAM) – started in Sept. 2015. The mission of the above initiative in Busia County, is to get the rural dwelling people in every Ward to develop an attitude that aligns our individual and collective aspirations and achievements with the Kenya Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals right at the village level. The specific aims include:
i. To promote the social, cultural and economic wellbeing of the residents of the 120 villages in the 35 Wards of Busia County. To support education and educational activities that improve the literacy levels of the residents of these villages
iii. To enhance activities that promote sustainable livelihoods of the residents of these villages
The achievements so far of the initiative include:
i. Through the “Friends of Koruruma Schools” association, there is:
a. Improved academic standards in Koruruma Primary School through the Teachers/Pupils welfare program. A plan to introduce the first Secondary School in Koruruma village. Through the “Ikaruok Self Help Group”, there is:
a. A cohesively united community (at clan level) which purposely aims at empowering themselves socio-culturally, economically and politically. Improved land use with the adoption of modern farming and livestock rearing techniques, environmental conservation and afforestation. THE BUSIA COUNTY DEVELOPMENT FORUM (CBO) – started in Aug. 2016
As a hub for the above Community Based Organization in Busia County, the main objectives include:
i. To promote good governance
ii. To promote environmental sustainability
iii. To promote gender and disability mainstreaming
The achievements of the CBO so far include:
i. Countywide sensitization and training of 500 members of women, youth and disability groups and business owners on the government’s “Access to Government Procurement Opportunities” program. Facilitated the provision of 10,000 plastic tubes, organic fertilizer/manure, seeds and tools for growing of tree seedlings countywide.
