Half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14, but most cases go undetected and untreated. The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day is: “Young people and mental health in a changing world”.

Mindfulness is a simple tool that could help you deal with daily stresses.

“The soccer team of 12 boys ages 11-16 was trapped in a cave for nearly 10 days before rescue officials located their whereabouts”.

“Left to survive with no food or clean water, and low oxygen levels, the boys turned to meditation for solace and survival—all thanks to the team’s coach”.

“Now that the benefits of meditation have been backed by research, it's becoming more common for mindfulness practices to be used in the treatment of mood disorders (like anxiety), and more people are tapping into mindfulness to deal with daily stress. Experts even say that introducing mindfulness meditation to children early on may help them develop skills like self-awareness, adaptability, and a more flexible, open mindset”.

Meditation here to save the day, quite literally.

Traumatic Stress occurs when a person finds it hard to feel safe after experiencing an overwhelming, endangering and threatening event. During such events, the body will automatically react for survival. After the event, if the person continues in this state of survival, “feelings of alarm and danger, tendencies to flee or fight, vulnerability and exhaustion, or an inability to assert and protect themselves, they will eventually impact their physical, emotional and psychological health.

Researchers show that trauma can be caused by subtle and hidden experiences especially in childhood.

“An experience does not have to be abusive or violent to inflict trauma. Trauma can occur from:

Neglect of a child’s emotional experience

· Emotionally unresponsive parenting (even when physical and financial needs are met)

· Bullying

· Shaming

· A caregiver’s substance abuse

· A parent’s angry outbursts

· Inadequate protection from danger

· Any experience that leaves a child feeling abandoned, threatened or helpless” .

Watching devastating events on the news can be traumatizing for people at any age.

Trauma shows up in every day life in countless ways. Some common symptoms include:

· Trouble sleeping

· Trouble managing intense emotions

· Self-harming behavior

· Substance abuse

· Relationship difficulties

· Recurring fights with loved ones

· High blood pressure

· Depression and Anxiety

You are a trauma survivor if you experience extreme stress that overwhelms your ability to cope.

Some causes of trauma include:

· Combat or war experience

· Witnessing someone being hurt or killed

· Sexual abuse of any kind or

· Physical abuse of any kind

· Domestic violence for the person experiencing it

· Domestic violence for anyone seeing or hearing it

· R**e

Trauma-informed therapists can help clients take better care of themselves by developing ways to recognize traumatic stress and manage it”.

What is trauma, and why do we need trauma-informed care? When a person feels overwhelmed, threatened and endangered, the mind and body react for survival. If the person can't find ways to feel safe again, the threat-response system tends to stay active, even if it's not obvious. That person is likel...
