Hey there! How are you holding up? Overcoming addiction is arguably one of the toughest battles out there- a journey few people may understand. One question often pops up when discussing addiction: What is the secret? To answer this, we need to know what addiction is.

Addiction is a mental disorder that disrupts your normal routine and enslaves you to your drug of choice. It is also a symptom of underlying issues, most that are often overlooked.

From childhood traumas, toxic workspaces, loss and grief, some cultures and societal biases may downplay such events. This leaves the victim vulnerable with no support to lean on.

Consequently, the victim resorts to drugs and substances to cope. The effects of substance abuse digs both individuals and their families down a rabbit hole, compromising their mental, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of self.

Fortunately, recovering from this is an open secret- with a myriad of resources to choose from including:

📌 Mental health professionals like counsellors, Psychologists and psychiatrists to guide affected persons.

📌 Online content from social media that focuses on addiction recovery.

📌 Alcoholic Anonymous(AA) Meetings scheduled in nearby neighbourhoods act as support systems.

📌 Mental health workshops held in workspaces, schools and community centers, tailored for specific audiences to learn more on addiction.

It is understandable that addiction recovery is an uphill task for both families and individuals. It is often a messy journey, which I offer to help in walking with you. Do not hesitate to reach out to me in your path to sobriety. Have a great afternoon.

Understanding addiction is often a long, slow process that parents have to endure as they help their child through sobriety. Addiction as a whole, is broad and consists of more than just compulsive substance use. There's a hushed form of addiction that is equally as destructive- behaviour addiction.

Behaviour addiction is a chronic brain disease that involves compulsive behavioural patterns despite negative consequences. Unlike substance addiction, symptoms of behaviour addiction are rarely obvious, hence going by unnoticed.

These symptoms unfortunately, are noticed in the eleventh hour, when an individual is a shadow of their former self. Forms of behaviour addictions like; gambling, compulsive shopping, kleptomania(obsessive stealing), Internet and s*x addiction are some of the most common amongst youth.

Due to the taboo nature of some of these addictions, parents can often shun their children or use harsh punishments to try and curb the vices. Fortunately, here's a way of helping your child involved in behaviour addiction.

👉 Learning on behaviour addiction- Through use of social media and Google, parents can learn more about this condition, what it entails and appropriate intervention strategies.

👉 Seek professional help- Approaching counsellors and psychiatrists can help the child gain professional help through use of modern counselling theories and psychotherapy.

Destigmatising behavioural addiction is key in helping your affected child. As an addiction counsellor, I'm willing to walk with you every step of the way. Have a good afternoon

Offering your child support in recovery is an uphill task. You may be unsure, confused even, on the best ways to do so. Fortunately, I’ve a number of suggestions to help.

👉 Establish firm boundaries- This includes assertiveness in decision making and implementing goals for both you and your child. Firm boundaries safeguard your wellbeing as you walk with them in the journey to recovery, as well as, minimize enabling tendencies.

👉 Promote a healthy lifestyle- This includes proper dieting, exercise, quality sleep and mindfulness. This lifestyle should promote not just a healthy mind, but also, a healthy body as well.

👉 Practice healthy communication- This involves use of listening skills and noting verbal and non verbal cues. It often demands compassion and empathy as you listen to your child without judgement.

👉 Practice self-care- As a parent, you also need to take care of yourself. Supporting your child in recovery poses risk of emotion and mental burnout. Reach out to a counsellor or a support group to aid in tending to your personal needs and safeguard your personal space.

👉 Encourage professional help- The journey to recovery is long and plagued with challenges. As a result, it is best to seek professional help for guidance and psychological support.

Having a loved one in addiction can be confusing and hard to know where you stand. This is where I come in. Reach out to me and lets walk the journey together.

Today, I choose to applaud the stakeholders in addiction recovery. Despite the spike in addiction cases, they have managed(to some degree) reduce substance abuse related stigma. How do they do it? Here are 5 ways that work.

âś…Use of Mental Health Campaigns- Spreading awareness by setting up workshops, seminars and conferences have helped spread awareness on drug addiction.

âś…Use of Media- Utilising the wide reach of legacy media through advertisements to demystify addiction. Organisations have even gone further to open social media accounts on; Facebook, Youtube and Instagram has proven resourceful in spreading the gospel of prevention and sobriety.

âś…Establishment of Care Facilities- Government and other stakeholders opened facilities to aid in treatment and intervention of affected persons. These facilities offer services such as; pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, spiritual therapy and psychoeducation to share addiction-related information.

âś…Implementing drug-related policies- The government has made and implemented favourable policies. For instance, the repealment of Section 226 of the Penal Code decriminalised su***de. This action promoted a more compassionate view on su***de and mental health in general.

âś…Training qualified mental health personnel- Government agencies such as NACADA and Counsellors and Psychologists Board(CPB) are continuously offering professional courses to refresh and sharpen mental health professionals. These courses are pivotal in equipping mental health workers with updated and universal knowledge on substance use prevention and treatment.

I do hope the efforts intensify as there's room for improvement on substance prevention awareness. As we close the week, let's embrace families with affected persons in addiction with love and empathy. Have a great weekend.

"The most beautiful part about learning is that no one can take it from you". This wise adage has been my push to upskill and learn more about substance addiction- offering you top quality knowledge and therapy while at it.

For the past two weeks, I have been undertaking the INEP+ Course, courtesy of ISSUP KENYA . I'm privileged to be part of the third cohort which is graced by the most amazing professionals I've interacted with.

📌Family-based Addiction- Related to family roles in Addiction.

📌 Environment-based Addiction- The impact of Addiction to our surroundings.

Have you ever felt isolated? Especially, in times of adversity and struggle? Parents with children battling addiction understand this better. Imagine the restless days and sleepless nights, accompanied by unanswered phone calls of your child, not knowing their whereabouts and worst of all, feeling powerless as you watch your kin sink into the abyss.

Consequently, some parents may abandon ship altogether or resolve rash, drastic measures. Which is why I choose to help them unpack and learn effective coping strategies, as you walk with your loved one towards sobriety.

Drug addiction is a family disease that ravages both the person and their families’ lives. Its destructive and silent nature is what drives victims and parents to survival mode. In most affected households, most parents trivialise and downplay the addiction’s severity-sweeping it under the rug and hoping it vanishes. Unfortunately, the recent spikes of drug abuse cases explains why this is ineffective. This further explains why most parents in this situation may feel powerless.

Despite drug addiction taking families hostage, there is a silver lining-acceptance. Acceptance is the acknowledgement of an existing problem and finding effective solutions. To both parents and persons in addiction, this should be your foundation in self-transformation. The best part about acceptance is you never have to do it alone.

As a substance addiction counsellor, I relish in seeing parents and their offspring reclaim their lives from drug addiction and I’m always willing to listen and help. You may reach out to me via dm or my official website https://moseskinyanjui.com/

Have a great week ahead!

Dear Parents,

Another day commences with another bout of hard truths from yours truly. That substance abuse isn’t meant to be coddled as it is a monster that robs you off the treasures of life.

Be it health, vigour or honour, substance addiction is non-discriminate and strips you bare. Watching your kin in such moments should be incentive enough to transform their journey towards sobriety. If you are a parent currently facing this, here’s where I can be of help.

✔️ Offer a listening ear without judgement or bias- Creating a safe space for the recovering persons and their parents.

✔️ Offer input towards formulating an action plan- Setting realistic goals, relapse prevention training and aftercare.

✔️ Offer knowledge and addiction related information- Sharing information concerning drug addiction, with the aim of demystifying the condition.

✔️ Offer emotional support- Validating feelings as well as teaching parents healthy coping mechanisms as they tend to their kin in recovery.

✔️ Encourage parents and their kin to use clear and direct communication- This could come in handy in enforcing healthy boundaries, promoting trust and commitment to recovery.

To anyone undergoing addiction or knows someone facing it, please do not hesitate to reach out. Let’s strive to embrace sobriety and empower our loved ones. I wish you all a good day.

NACADA has issued a statement citing rehabilitation centers to follow the law in their operations. Following the governing board's recent inspections to various rehabilitation centers, it has noted with concern that some facilities have disregarded various legal frameworks and data requirements.

Specifically, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances(Control) Act, 1994. This Control Act addresses issues of supply, manufacture, use and distribution of narcotics, as well as intervention and treatment in Kenya. NACADA warns of closure of facilities found disregarding this Act.

Furthermore, rehabilitation centers are advised to follow the Data Protection Act, 2019. Part V in particular, addresses the processing of sensitive personal health data. Contravention of this Act could lead to closure of the facilities and fines on the proprietors.

While this is commendable, queries concerning enforcement of these Act arise, especially with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances(Control) Act, 1994. Its challenges since inception are yet to addressed including but not limited to:

â—Ź Lenient fines imposed on offenders

â—Ź Specific provisions on punishing persons conspiring outside Kenyans borders.

â—Ź Delayed investigations and prosecutions

â—Ź Outdated guidelines of the Act.

As we settle into the new year, I look forward to seeing both Acts being updated and enforced efficiently. Have a great afternoon
