Sound healing is a wellness modality using sound and vibration to harmonize the body, mind, heart and soul.

It is most widely associated with the singing bowls, either brass or crystal, but there are a variety of sound healing instruments including the didgeridoo, the rattle and the gong. On the African continent, drums, vocals, stringed instruments, mbira and flutes are widespread.

The term originated in Nepal in the 60s, when the brass Himalayan singing bowls started to be explicitly used for healing, especially for chakra balancing - but the bowls’ history goes way back thousands of years. Sound, vibration and music as tools for meditation, healing and expansion of consciousness date back to the early existence of humankind. Sound healing can be found throughout the world in different traditions, with different instruments, even though the term only became formalised recently.

Here at Sound Healing Africa, we focus on traditional instruments and share trainings through lineage traditions. You can engage with the vibrations of the Kenyan drum, lute and kalimba as well as brass singing bowls sourced from the Himalayas - for starters. More to come!
