What’s really happening in the fight against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)?

Behind every data point is a story of missed opportunities, health inequities, and communities left behind. That’s where our new segment—the —comes in. It's a new weekly series offering sharp, data-driven insights into the state of in Kenya, Africa, and beyond.

This week, we spotlight a persistent challenge: Kenya’s Deworming Coverage Gap.

Over 6 million Kenyan children are at risk of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections like roundworm, whipworm, and hookworm. These infections rob children of nutrients, stunt growth, and impair learning.

Despite years of national deworming efforts, recent evaluations reveal that only about 69–75% of at risk children are reached—leaving nearly 1 in 4 unprotected.

While national prevalence has fallen from 32.3% in 2012 to 12.9% today, hotspot counties like Vihiga, Busia, and Kakamega still record infection rates above 20%.
And younger children? In some areas, nearly half of preschool-aged children are missing out on deworming altogether.

At , we believe that no child should be left behind due to a preventable infection. We are calling for:

âś… Stronger MDA campaigns in underserved counties.

âś… Integration of deworming with WASH education.

âś… Youth-led community advocacy to raise awareness and bust myths.

On this week’s , we address a common misconception: that only affect individuals who are unhygienic. While personal cleanliness plays a role in general health, it is not the primary cause of tungiasis.

The true risk lies in environmental and structural conditions—such as living in homes with unsealed floors, exposure to dusty surroundings, lack of consistent footwear, and limited access to proper sanitation. In endemic areas, even individuals who maintain good hygiene are vulnerable simply because of where they live.

Stigma rooted in this myth often leads to shame, social exclusion, and delays in seeking care.

At , we advocate for:

âś… Improved living conditions.

âś… Greater access to infrastructure.

âś… Public education grounded in evidence.

✅ Policies that address the root causes—not just the symptoms—of neglected tropical diseases like tungiasis.

Dispelling such misinformation is crucial to promoting compassion and effective community response 🌍

On our segment this week, we highlight the jigger flea (Tunga penetrans), the parasite behind .

This tiny sand flea burrows head first into the skin—typically on the feet—where it feeds on blood and tissue while its abdomen swells to carry hundreds of eggs.

Only a small part remains exposed to breathe and release eggs, while the rest stays embedded in the foot, triggering pain, swelling, itching, and inflammation. If left untreated, the site can become infected, leading to serious complications.

Understanding the flea’s life cycle is key to early diagnosis, safe treatment, and prevention in affected communities 🌍

On this week’s , we focus on —commonly known as .

Affecting over 20 million people globally, tungiasis is a Neglected Tropical Disease caused by the female sand flea Tunga penetrans, which burrows into the skin—most often on the feet.

The result? Painful lesions, inflammation, secondary infections, and in severe cases, permanent disability or even death.

Despite its devastating impact, remains one of the most underreported and overlooked , primarily affecting marginalized communities. The disease thrives in conditions of poverty, poor hygiene, and lack of access to clean water and sanitation.

Globally, tungiasis is most prevalent in parts of South America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa. In Africa, countries like Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Ethiopia are endemic zones.

In Kenya, hotspots include counties in the Western, Coastal, and Nyanza regions such as Homa Bay, Siaya, Kilifi, and Busia—where children, the elderly, and people living in informal settlements are disproportionately affected.

The disease often goes untreated due to limited awareness, stigma, and lack of inclusion in national health priorities. Recurrent infestations are common, particularly in communities with limited access to footwear, clean water, and hygiene facilities.

At , we believe it’s time to bring Tungiasis out of the shadows hence, we advocate for:

🔹Increased WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) investment in endemic areas.

🔹Community led health education to dismantle myths and stigma.

🔹Youth-driven surveillance and awareness campaigns.

🔹Inclusion of tungiasis in national and county control strategies.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, men die 5 years earlier than women on average—often from preventable causes 👤

Yet many men delay seeking care for both physical and mental health issues. In regions burdened by Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), this silence can be deadly.

From river blindness to , silently affect millions of men—reducing productivity, causing long term disability, and worsening outcomes especially for men who suffer in silence.

At , we are spotlighting these often overlooked health burdens during this (June 9–15), because true strength begins with awareness, prevention, and bold action.

đź’¬ Break the silence, start the conversation.

🏥 Prioritize routine checkups.

🧍🏾‍♂️ Safeguard your mental and physical health.

To the families, friends, and colleagues: your support can be life changing. Check in. Listen. Encourage action—because when men are healthy, families flourish and communities grow stronger 👥

On our series—Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, causing sudden fever, severe joint pain, fatigue, and rashes. While rarely fatal, its symptoms can be debilitating and long lasting, especially in older adults.

Despite no specific treatment, early diagnosis, rest, fluids, and symptom management significantly reduce the risk of complications. However, limited awareness and poor vector control in high risk communities worsen the burden—especially during rainy seasons.

Preventing chikungunya requires sustained, multi-sectoral efforts:

âś… Community education on mosquito prevention.

âś… Proper waste disposal and drainage.

âś… Access to healthcare and diagnostics.

âś… Integrating response strategies into national health systems.

At , we advocate for youth led initiatives, integrated vector control, and WASH centered solutions to tackle mosquito borne at the grassroots level.

Together, we can stop chikungunya in its tracks—before it spreads 🌍

On today’s , we spotlight , following recent outbreaks reported by the Ministry of Health, Kenya, particularly across Kenya's coastal region.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), outbreaks have been reported in over 110 countries worldwide, with frequency and reach increasing due to climate change, rapid urbanization, and global travel.

What was once a localized virus has become a widespread concern, disproportionately affecting communities in low and middle income regions—where access to healthcare and vector control measures remain limited.

In Kenya, a recent outbreak has been confirmed in Mombasa County (June 2025). According to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), 25 out of 45 samples tested positive for the virus. The most affected areas include Mvita, Nyali, Likoni, and Kisauni sub-counties.

Heavy rains have created ideal breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, contributing to a surge in infections and raising urgent public health concerns in the region.

At , we call for:

âś… Enhanced public education. uth

âś… Youth driven health advocacy.

âś… Investment in integrated vector control and WASH systems.

Today, May 28, 2025, we join the global community in marking —a day dedicated to advancing menstrual health and hygiene for girls and women everywhere.

This year’s theme, “Together for a ,” reminds us of the ongoing need to break taboos, promote menstrual education, and ensure access to safe, dignified hygiene solutions—especially for those in underserved communities.

This year’s commemoration will take place at Enkare Nairouwa Primary School in NAROK COUNTY GOVERNMENT, with Hon. Aden Bare Duale, EGH, Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Kenya, gracing the occasion as Chief Guest.
