My most enjoyable part of preemie parenting was kangaroo care where I got the opportunity to bond with my three preterm babies (Joshua, Joseph and Immaculate) and also gave me confidence to care for my babies and respond to their needs.” Said Bernard during celebrations for babies born preterm at the hospital to commemorate the day. The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi has donated two mobile vaccination clinics and 20 vaccine storage fridges valued at KSh 46 million (RWF 490Million) to the Government of Rwanda to support the delivery of the immunization programme.
The donation is financed by the German government through a grant offered by the German Development Bank (KfW).
Handing over the donation, AKUH,N Chief Operations Officer, Shekar Iyer, noted that the donation “affirms the commitment of the Aga Khan Development Network and its partners, to improve the quality of life in the communities that we operate”
“We are excited to partner with the government of Rwanda to increase access to immunization, a critical aspect of a healthy nation. Through this partnership, we are living our values of creating lasting impact and increasing access to quality care for all. We look forward to more partnerships with the people of Rwanda,” he added.

A biomass boiler project commissioned by Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi in September 2023 has won the National Energy Globe Award granted by the Energy Globe Foundation Austria.
The project has reduced diesel use by 950,000 litres per year. This has resulted in a decrease of 2000 tons of carbon emissions in the first year of operations, which is similar to driving back and forth between Nairobi and Mombasa almost 700 times in an average-sized automobile.

His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims passed away peacefully in Lisbon on 4 February 2025, aged 88, surrounded by his family. Prince Karim Aga Khan was the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network.
Aga Khan IV established the Aga Khan University as part of the AKDN in 1983 in order to improve the quality of life in the developing world and beyond through world-class teaching, research, and healthcare delivery. Driven by His Highness’ expansive vision, constant guidance and generosity, AKU has grown to be recognized as one of the finest universities in the world and a beacon of hope for the communities whom we serve.
The faculty, staff, students and volunteers of the Aga Khan University offer our condolences to the family of His Highness and to the Ismaili community worldwide. As we pay tribute to the legacy of our beloved Founder and Chancellor, we continue to work to bring His Highness’ vision to life.

Aga Khan University held a graduation ceremony for clinical fellows on Saturday. Aga Khan University Hospital CEO Rashid Halani (fourth from left) and Aga Khan University College of Medicine Dean Prof. Lukoye Atwoli (fifth from left) congratulated the graduates, who included cardiologists, oncologists, neonatologists, pediatric neurologists and nuclear medicine specialists. The milestone event underscores the university's contribution to training highly qualified medical professionals capable of providing advanced patient care in various fields of medicine.
