Today, Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital hosted a delegation of representatives from the Ghana AIDS Commission for a learning visit focused on harm reduction programmes.

The visit provided an important opportunity for professional exchange and shared learning. The delegation engaged in detailed discussions on the structure, implementation, and operationalization of harm reduction services within the hospital setting.

A key highlight of the visit was a guided tour of the Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Clinic, where the delegates had the opportunity to interact with the team and gain insight into the range of services offered. The clinic team showcased its comprehensive care model, emphasizing client-centered service delivery and integrated support systems.

Dr. Kori and Dr. Njuguna led the technical sessions, taking the delegates through the learning process and practical aspects of programme implementation. They shared experiences, lessons learned, and best practices that have informed the development and strengthening of harm reduction services at the facility.

Dr. Victoria Wamukhoma, Head of Clinical Services and Psychiatrist at Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, is actively participating as a key panelist. She is sharing valuable insights into various mental health disorders and detailing the comprehensive care pathways, specialized services, and support systems provided by Mathari Hospital for individuals and families affected by these conditions.
The panel also features Ms. Gathoni Mbugua, Head of Digital Relations at Chiromo Hospital Group; Dr. Rajab Saddam, Consultation Psychiatrist at Kenyatta National Hospital ; and Dr. Prashna Shah, Consultant Psychologist and Trauma Specialist at M.P Shah Hospital.

Today, a delegation from Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital (MNTRH), led by Head of Clinical Services Dr. Victoria Wamukhoma and Head of the Psychology Department Madam Seline, visited the Kenya Red Cross Society to learn from its established tele-counseling operations.

This visit directly supports MNTRH’s initiative to introduce a dedicated tele-mental health call center, reinforcing Mathari’s role as Kenya’s leading specialized mental health institution.The engagement is a key step toward operationalizing the country’s largest tele-mental health call center at Mathari Hospital.

By drawing insights from the Kenya Red Cross’s effective 24/7 toll-free helpline (1199), MNTRH aims to broaden access confidential support, reach underserved communities, strengthen crisis response, and promote early intervention and stigma reduction nationwide.

Nurse Sudi Wanjiro delivered a focused session on adult resuscitation techniques tailored to patients. The Pharmacy Team provided an overview of emergency drugs used in emergency care and guidance on managing emergencies.
Representatives from Johnson & Johnson presented on Invega Sustenna, with emphasis on proper administration techniques.
This CME session reflects MNTRH’s commitment to continuous professional development and improved emergency preparedness in specialized mental health care.

Today, the MNTRH Employee Wellness Committee, under the leadership of Dr. Ochieng', conducted a comprehensive sensitization program for Wellness Champions drawn from all departments across the institution. The session was designed to strengthen their understanding of the Employee Wellness Policy and enhance their role in promoting a supportive and healthy work environment.

The key topics discussed included an overview and objectives of the policy, the policy framework, the institutional framework for implementation, as well as monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. Participants were guided through the purpose and scope of the policy, with emphasis placed on aligning wellness initiatives with the hospital’s strategic goals. The discussions also clarified roles and responsibilities within the institutional framework, ensuring that Wellness Champions understand their contribution to effective implementation.

Additionally, the session highlighted the importance of structured monitoring and evaluation in tracking progress, measuring impact, and ensuring continuous improvement of wellness programs. Participants engaged in interactive discussions, sharing insights and practical approaches to embedding wellness principles within their respective departments.

The program was graced by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Victoria Wamukhoma, whose presence reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to prioritizing staff well-being as a cornerstone of quality healthcare delivery.
