Healthcare workers mental health is key to quality healthcare delivery.

Recently I engaged with young Medical Doctors to offer them psycho-social support as my way of giving back to the community. Having a background in clinical medicine and surgery, I have worked with healthcare workers all my career life. I have witnessed the negative impact a helping profession can have on an individual and by extension their families.Female healthcare workers has unique challenges balancing their career and family life.

One of the participant was in a dilemma because she want to advance to masters in Neurosurgery which will take her another six years minimum. Society is on her neck " when are you having a family", Mentor is on her neck " when are you starting your masters" Herself " do I have the finances, do I have a person ready to start life with me? do I really want to remain in clinical work do to the trauma this job have exposed me too?' What a dilemma!

It was so clear after these discussion that healthcare workers are going through a lot:
1. Vicarious trauma
2. High societal expectations
3. Financial distress
4. Competing demands career progression vs reproductive roles.

Just be kind to healthcare workers, they are human with humanity problems in addition to professional demands.
The mental health of healthcare workers matter.

As a practising therapist and a facilitator in mental health, I have come to appreciate that achieving mental well-being is an ongoing process. It is determined by our biology, our psychological state , social factors and environment. Decisions we make every second of our life contribute significantly to our mental well-being.
They are crucial decisions that we make without paying much attention to the impact this decisions have on our mental well-being. The most common one's that mess up our mental well-being are:
1. The spouse/ partner you choose.
2. The money decisions you made.
3. The work and work environment you choose.
4. The unhealthy habits you choose.
5.The spiritual life you choose.
6. The quality of relationships you choose- office, family, neighbourhood.

Just reflect on what causes you stress and throws you off balance.
My advice
Next time you are making any decision about any item in above list:
1. Think if it will serve you well the : next year, 5 years or 10 years to come. Think long-term impact.
2. Think who you are and if the decision you are making aligns with your values and personality.
3. Think where you want to be in future and if that decision you are making today will impact you positively or will hinder your progress.

hashtag may not be sure about tomorrow but you can choose wisely and hope for a better tomorrow

My interest in psychology was sparked by my medical patients who demonstrated symptoms which could not be explained biologically.

My patients also could develop physical symptoms without a medical condition!

My patients could worsen despite the best medical intervention!

My patients would improve without a medical intervention , some after just talking to them or a situation in their life improving!

As a young Clinician, I could observe all these dynamics and phenomenon >>>.. it bothered me for a while, I wondered what it was? I keenly observed the patterns .

After a while one thing stood out for me " THE STATE OF THE MIND" made all the difference.

The words of the Holy book " As a man thinketh in his heart ,so is he"

Majority Those patients who took their sickness as a curse and they believed they could not make it, they worsened and lost their life.!!

Majority of those patients who believed they will get well and will live, they got well and lived!

From that early age till now I am convinced that" the Mind of a human being is very powerful.
