The first author of the paper, Shebani Sethi, MD, says there is increasing evidence that psychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder stem from metabolic deficits in the brain, which affect the excitability of neurons.

Hai warriors! Leave an emoji in the comments if you see this post.

I just wanted to hop on here being that it is World Bipolar Day to let anyone who's feeling like they're all alone in it know that they're not. My name is Melvis & I live with Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental health condition characterised by periods of extreme mood swings, including episodes of mania or hypomania and depression. I've lived with it for 11 years and for most of that I felt out of place & alone. The minute I found out what this illness meant I took it upon myself to advocate for the same, to educate, to raise awareness, eliminate stigma... and even then, I knew how important it was to stress that You Are Not Alone. It is my slogan, Kintsugi Support; You are Not Alone.

I know how scary & isolating this illness is... how misunderstood you can feel... but believe me when I say; you got this. Learn as much as you can, don't be afraid to ask questions... you are strong enough to take this on. Do not be ashamed to seek help. I know it's sometimes hard, but please be encouraged... seek help when you need it. You can lead your version of a normal life after treatment. Bipolar disorder is treatable.

It's not been easy, but I'm living a normal life, or at least my version of it. Loving myself through it. 💋

Reframing thoughts series—Share any thought that’s stuck in your head in the “Ask Questions” highlight above.
This is another common experience. It’s human nature to worry because it helps us prepare for what’s to come. However, if you find yourself obsessing, you may be engaging in a common thinking error called catastrophizing.

Catastrophizing is when we assume the worst will happen and filter/avoid/excuse any other possibility. It creates a negative filter for our thoughts.
Try these reframed statement this week to see if it helps. We’re not looking for extinction of the original feelings that the unhelpful statement created, but we are looking for a shift in emotions. Remember that IG is not therapy. This post is an educational tool. If this reframed thought doesn’t work for you, it doesn’t mean that therapy won’t work for you.

There is no 'look' to su***de.

Su***de does not have a stereotype. It can happen to anyone, even the folks in our lives who look the farthest from what we think su***de 'looks' like. ❌

Case in point, first picture is of tWitch, who used to DJ for the Ellen Degeneres show, always putting up a smile and cheering up thousands of folks every day.

Second picture is of Robin Williams, world-famous comedian and actor.

Lastly, there's Chester Bennington, lead vocalist for Linkin Park.

All of these men do not look 'suicidal'. Yet it still happened. Robin in 2014, Chester in 2017, tWitch just a few days ago.

Learn more about su***de warning signs. Spread awareness about su***de and how to respond when someone opens up.

And most of all, don't be afraid to reach out -- both if you suspect that someone may be thinking of su***de, and if you are suicidal yourself.

Don't be fooled by smiles and cheers and think that everything is okay when it's not.

Because often times, the widest smiles harbor the darkest feelings.

Save and share this post as a reminder and also to get the word out. It's the small things that can save lives.
