Greetings fellow Kenyans. Welcome again to Dr Ngechu Gasex Clinic Ruiru.
Stomach or abdominal pain is commonly caused by temporary issues like gas, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, or virus-related infections (stomach flu). While most cases are not serious, sharp, constant, or worsening pain requires prompt medical attention. Treatment usually involves addressing the underlying cause via lifestyle changes, medications, or rest.
Common Causes of Abdominal Pain
•Digestion Issues: Gas, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, food poisoning, or food allergies.
•Inflammation/Infection: Stomach flu (gastroenteritis), ulcers, or urinary tract infections (UTIs).
•Muscular/Menstrual: Pulled stomach muscles or cramps associated with menstruation.
•Medical Conditions: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gallbladder issues, appendicitis, or Crohn’s disease.
When to Seek Medical Care (Emergency Symptoms)
Seek immediate medical attention if the pain is severe, constant, and accompanied by:
▪️A high fever.
▪️Persistent vomiting or diarrhea.
▪️Blood in the stool.
▪️Tenderness to the touch or a rigid abdomen.
▪️Pain that wakes you up or radiates to the chest, neck, or shoulder.
Types and Locations of Pain
✴️General/Central: Often related to infection (appendicitis, UTI) or digestive issues.
✴️Upper Abdomen: Often indicates GERD, gallstones, or pancreatitis.
✴️Lower Abdomen: Often indicates diverticulitis, appendicitis, or gynecological issues (ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease).
✴️Chronic vs. Acute: Acute pain develops rapidly, while chronic pain lasts for weeks or months, potentially indicating underlying chronic conditions.
