PID is an infection and inflammation of the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.
In PID, bacteria travel from the va**na or cervix into the upper reproductive system, leading to infection and possible scarring or the organs.
This can cause irreversible damage to the fallopian tubes, especially if not treated on time, making it difficult to conceive..........
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS?
If PID is not diagnosed and treated early, it could lead to serious, life threatening complications.
They include:
- Infertility: PID is the leading cause of blocked fallopian tubes, which can lead to infertility.
- Ectopic pregnancy: Scarring in the fallopian tubes increase the risk of an ectopic pregnancy- a condition where fertilized egg implants outside the uterus.
- Chronic pelvic pain: Some women experience chronic and persistent pain, even after treatment of the infection.
- Tubo-ovarian abscess: In severe cases, pus-filled abscesses can form in the reproductive organs.
This may require surgical drainage to prevent it from bursting and spreading infection.
