MEET OUR SEPTEMBER YOGA TEACHER 🕉️

Lolly started her yoga journey over 18 years ago.
Her initial yoga training was in Rishikesh, India, 6 years ago, which inspired her to come back to Brighton to teach in an educational setting and also in the community. Lolly’s teaching went beyond yoga as she also worked as a specialist tutor for neurospicy teenagers in the local college. Eventually with further yoga and meditation trainings under her belt, her passion for teaching took her to Goa in India.

She has since taught back in the UK where she holds soothing radical rest workshops and has been back teaching in the south of India in Kerala, to an intentional yoga community in Canada and to retreats in Bali and Thailand.

With Lolly you’ll find a supportive space to explore your mind and body, deepen your practice, and have fun. Lolly’s mission is simple: to help as many people as she can to enjoy the wonderful benefits of movement, and to make it fun and accessible for everyBODY.

🕉️ Why We Bring Our Hands to Anjali Mudra in Yoga Practice 🕉️

At the beginning and end of our yoga classes, we draw our hands together at the heart center— a gesture that carries profound meaning on physical, energetic, and spiritual levels.

• Anjali means “offering,” and Mudra means “seal” or “gesture.” This hand position is more than a movement—it’s a moment of stillness, reverence, and connection.

•Energetically, placing the hands at the heart activates the Anahata (Heart Chakra), the energetic center of compassion, love, and emotional balance. It helps us return to presence.

• Physically, it balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain, centers the mind, and prepares the nervous system for deeper introspection. It creates a sense of grounding and unity as we transition into and out of our practice.

• Spiritually, Anjali Mudra is a gesture of gratitude and humility—an offering to the self, the community, and the lineage of teachers who have passed this practice down through generations.

🕉️ Why Do We Like to Begin Our Classes with the Gayatri Mantra?

In Vedic tradition, mantra is not just sound — it is vibration encoded with intention. One of the most revered of these is the Gayatri Mantra, found in the Rig Veda, and considered a formula for awakening higher consciousness.

ॐ भूर् भुवः स्वः
These are three sacred sounds that represent the three levels of existence:

Bhūr – the physical world (our body and the earth)
Bhuvaḥ – the mental world (our thoughts and emotions)
Svaḥ – the spiritual world (our higher self or consciousness)

तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं
“We meditate on that most divine light of the sun (Savitur), which is worthy of our devotion.”
It’s about connecting to the source of energy, light, and life.

भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि
“We meditate on the brilliance of the Divine.”
This line focuses our attention inward, toward truth and clarity.

धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्
“May this light guide our thoughts and understanding.”
It’s a prayer for wisdom — to see clearly and act wisely.

This ancient Vedic mantra is a profound prayer for insight. By reciting it, we align with a timeless intention: to transcend distraction, to awaken truth, and to move through practice with presence.

✨ The sound vibration of this mantra creates stillness. It prepares the mind, steadies the breath, and invites a deeper awareness into each movement that follows.

📿 Why before asana practice?
Because the quality of attention we bring to the mat shapes the depth of our experience. Because the way we enter practice matters. The Gayatri Mantra helps us shift from distraction to focus, from doing to being. It settles the mind and reminds us that yoga is more than movement — it’s a path toward clarity and inner awareness.

At Zenhouse Yoga, mindfulness is a core component of every class. We emphasize it to help students cultivate greater awareness of their bodies, breath, and movement patterns. This approach supports safer, more intentional practice and builds mental resilience both on and off the mat.
