Among the many and very important issues discussed during our recent annual general meeting, it was decided our school needed to undergo a name change! Our new name, Kiribati School and Centre for Children with Disabilities reflects updated and more appropriate use of disability inclusive language whilst preserving an accurate description of what we do. Also, our new name is much easier to say and remember, reduces alphabet soup to KSCCD and is modern.

Everything else about our school is exactly the same, only better! We will still be known informally as the Kiribati Special School and for all our wonderful friends following our journey on Facebook, you have to do absolutely nothing to continue receiving updates from us. Obviously, we've retired the KSCCSN username so if linking to our page on Facebook, please update to kiribatispecialschool which reflects our informal and often, more well known name within Kiribati. You can also use kiribatispecialschool as a hashtag when talking about us on social media, alternatively, use KSCCD.

A new name but exactly the same, that's us! Our commitment to providing the best possible educational opportunities for our students will never ever change.

A very proud moment for the KSCCSN family as we welcomed home our dear friends and former students, Ms Anna Kaitu and Ketia Toakarawa who have recently concluded studying at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji.

Successful recipients of Kiribati government scholarships, more than two years of pandemic related disruptions, lockdowns, homesickness and being stranded and unable to return home did not stop these two inspirational people from giving their all, studying as hard as they could and coming away with diplomas, among the first people with disability from Kiribati to graduate at USP.

Anna and Ketia, having vision and hearing impairment came to the Special School in the hope they could go onto tertiary studies and learn alongside their friends regardless of disability. Through the hard work of these students, backed up by our amazing teachers, friends and supporters from around the world, this dream was able to become a reality.

We as a school are proud of the role we played in the lives of Anna and Ketia so far and most of all, proud of their wonderful achievements in overcoming adversity no one could have foreseen to return home, having completed study and representing their country in such a positive way.

Supporting the KSCCSN enables more people like Anna and Ketia to go to school and achieve great things.

Congratulations Anna and Ketia!

Mauri all students, staff, friends, families and supporters.

Our first post to this page each year usually welcomes our community back to school following the Christmas holidays but sadly, due to an ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, this year begins a little differently to past years. While lockdown conditions remain in place, the beginning of term 1 has been delayed.

All of us are thinking of and praying for our school and Kiribati community in these difficult times and we'll be back, bigger and better than ever as soon as the situation stabilises.

While our Special School is currently closed, you can still make contributions via the link on our page and whatever you give will assist our students during these difficult times and when school resumes in the near future.

Kam rabwa everyone!

We are so lucky and blessed to have a wonderful KSCCSN family of supporters from all over the world, doing amazing things to support our special kids and our special school.

Mr Mark Overbeeke, a long-time member of our family from the Netherlands recently undertook a half marathon in support of the KSCCSN. After months of training, the big day arrived and he went into that race, keeping in mind all the things he was making possible for special children and young adults on a distant Pacific islet.

Mark was joined by another inspiration, a 9-year-old boy named Luke who originally planned to run 10 kilometres but ended up completing the entire race, a fantastic achievement!

Mark now plans to work with young athletes who are blind, becoming a guide runner for them during races.

Mark, along with the Netherlands Kiribati Friendship Association assisted in the purchase of a new Braille embosser which is about to be delivered to the school and has been supportive of our work and our children for many, many years.

Mark is continuing to raise funds in honour of his half marathon achievement, all proceeds going to our school. If you'd like to contribute, visit his GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/46jbrg-help-mark-raise-money?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer

As we observed Teachers Day earlier this month, we also celebrated a very special occasion, 40 years of special education in Kiribati! While the current incarnation of the Special School did not exist 40 years ago, what began as a gathering of parents who were concerned about the lack of educational opportunities for their special children ultimately resulted in what we have today, a world class, state of the art facility where children and young adults with disability can learn, thrive and move into the community with confidence and the skills they need.

A quick browse of our social media presence and you'd be forgiven for thinking we are the party capital of the world. Behind all these wonderful occasions we so love observing, and the amazing opportunities we offer our students lies dedication and commitment beyond belief through our wonderful school community where teachers, students, parents, friends and family from all over the world join together to achieve the goal of education for all. What we have in terms of facilities and community spirit is a result of every single person doing their best to support our special place.

Let's continue to ensure the KSCCSN exists for another 40 years and much, much more!

All contributions gratefully received, either via GoFundMe (accessible via our page and-or PayPal: http://www.paypal.me/helpbenclare

All giving options are secure and are available in most countries around the world.

Kam rabwa (Thank you!)
