PNUH Achieves 200 TAVI Cases – First in the Yeongnam Region
Demonstrating Excellence in Personalized Cardiac Care for the Elderly.
- Operates a multidisciplinary “Comprehensive Cardiac Care” system, improving accessibility with expanded insurance coverage
- Minimally invasive procedure ensures faster recovery; a viable option for high-risk and very elderly patients
Aortic stenosis is a common condition in elderly populations, with a prevalence of approximately 10% in individuals over the age of 80. Early detection is challenging due to the lack of symptoms in the initial stages. By the time symptoms such as dyspnea, chest pain, or syncope appear, the disease has often progressed to a severe stage.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive procedure for severe aortic stenosis that involves inserting a prosthetic valve via the femoral artery, without opening the chest. It is primarily performed in elderly or high-risk patients who are not suitable candidates for open-heart surgery. TAVI is now recognized as a leading non-surgical treatment option due to its shorter procedure time, faster recovery, and avoidance of general anesthesia.
The TAVI team at Pusan National University Hospital ensures optimal outcomes through:
✔ Selection of customized prosthetic valves tailored to each patient’s anatomical characteristics
✔ A comprehensive, multidisciplinary cardiac care system
✔ Pre- and post-procedure rehabilitation programs
Professor Jung-Hyun Choi of the Department of Cardiology stated:
“TAVI has become a well-established and reliable treatment option. We will continue to play a leading role in advancing cardiac care in the region.”
