We continue the topic of rosacea, you can read the first part in the previous post 👉
In this part, I will talk about secondary signs and symptoms, what causes rosacea and how to treat it.
Secondary Signs and Symptoms
•Burning & Stinging
Burning or stinging sensations may often occur on the face. Itching or a feeling of tightness may also develop.
•Swelling
Facial swelling, known as edema, may accompany other signs of rosacea or occur independently. Raised red patches, known as plaques, may develop without changes in the surrounding skin.
•Dryness
The central facial skin may be rough and appear scaly despite some patients complaining of oily skin
WHAT CAUSES ROSACEA?
- Genetic predisposition
- Neurovascular and immune system factors
- Mites (Demodex folliculorum has been considered as a potential contributor to rosacea)
- Bacteria
The triggers that make symptoms worse:
Alcohol, cheese, caffeine, hot or spicy foods or drinks, aerobic exercise like running and intense exercise, sunlight, hot or cold temperatures, wind, stress, hot baths, medicines such as blood pressure drugs or steroids you put on your skin.
📌 TREATMENTS
Systemic antibacterial treatment,
Systemic retinoids
Topical antibacterial and anti inflammatory therapy (metronidazole, azelaic acid)
IPL and laser therapy for blood vessels
Botulinotherapy (the latest and effective therapy for early symptoms of rosacea)
Botulinum toxin injections may be effective in treating facial redness stemming for rosacea.
The therapy helps to decrease flushing, redness, and inflammation within one week; with results continuing up to 4 months after injection.
