Breastfeeding mothers have a lower risk of breast & ovarian cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and osteoporosis

When you care for your baby, you care for yourself too. 💗

Breastfeeding not only nourishes your child,
but also lowers your risk of cancer, heart disease, and other serious health issues. It’s one of the most powerful acts of love you can give… for both of you.

At HSA, we’re committed to supporting Cayman’s mothers, offering expert care, resources, and encouragement at every stage.

The next Sickle Cell Support Group meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 23 Sept 2025, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM in the Hibiscus Conference Room at HSA.

This session will feature Community Dietitian Tamara Whorms-Riley, who will share information about the importance of nutrition and sickle cell disorder.

The meeting is open to the public, and we encourage all interested individuals to attend.

The Sickle Cell Support Group is a safe and welcoming space for individuals living with sickle cell disease and their families to come together, share experiences and receive support. It usually meets twice a year and is organised by the Genetic Coordinator in the Public Health Department.

These meetings are designed to:
• Provide emotional & social support
• Share useful information about managing sickle cell disease
• Offer an opportunity to ask questions and engage with healthcare professionals
• Help affected individuals and their families feel less alone by connecting with others who understand their journey.

For more details contact the Genetics Coordinator at 244-7887 or email Cynthia.Powell@hsa.ky.

West Bay Health Centre opens dialysis unit

Dialysis patients in West Bay can now receive treatment closer to home with the opening of a new dialysis unit at the West Bay Health Centre by the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA).

The new unit started its operations in August 2025 and is equipped with two advanced B Braun dialysis machines, which are known for their precision and efficiency, and two comfortable dialysis chairs. The highly qualified staff at the facility are certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), ensuring that patients receive the best possible care in the event of an emergency. “With its modern equipment and skilled staff, our new dialysis unit is fully equipped to provide high-quality dialysis treatment to those in need,” said HSA’s Dialysis Unit Nurse Manager, Erlin McLeod.

The opening of the dialysis unit is part of a major initiative by the HSA to continue improving quality and accessibility for patients across districts. Speaking at the opening of the unit on 7 August 2025, Acting CEO of HSA, Dr. Delroy Jefferson stated, “The opening of this new dialysis unit is another significant step in HSA's commitment to equitable access to care for all residents, regardless of their district.”

The hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, and on Wednesday from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

To contact the Dialysis Unit, call 244-2624 or 244-2679.
