“Trauma treatment assumes a return to safety and that the danger has passed,” notes Shabb, “but there hasn’t really been a return to safety. People feel that there is no guarantee that if they heal here [in Lebanon], that they are not going to have to go through something similar next year or in a few years.”

Joumana Ammar, a child and adolescent psychotherapist at the American University of Beirut Medical Centre said she has treated many children over the past year experiencing symptoms such as separation anxiety and bed-wetting as a result of the blast.

Using various approaches to collect data from the public, the team of researchers at the American University of Beirut assessed the impact of that day on the mental health of exposed adults, adolescents and children. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 position at the Department of Psychiatry AUBMC

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
The main component of this work involves applying statistical methods. The research assistant will work closely with the project’s investigator to complete data entry, data cleaning, data management, statistical analysis, and to disseminate the project’s findings.

𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
• Master in epidemiology or biostatistics (MPH candidates with good analytical skills are also invited to apply).
• Excellent research skills.
• Experience in conducting statistical analysis.
• Solid knowledge of statistical software (STATA/ SPSS).
• Thorough, meticulous, and ability to work independently.
• Excellent English skills.

𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬:
Assist the research team in: data entry, data management; conduct data analysis; coordinate the different phases of the project; and write reports and manuscripts summarizing the findings.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
• Full time.
• One-year contract with the possibility of extension.
• Start date: September 1st, 2021
