في عام 1922، اكتُشف بوق أذن فضي صغير داخل مقبرة الملك توت عنخ آمون، يُعد من أقدم أجهزة السمع المعروفة في التاريخ (حوالي 1332 ق.م).
على الرغم من قيمته الرمزية، إلا أن فعاليته السمعية كانت محدودة جدًا—إذ يحتاج البوق لمخرج أكبر لجمع المزيد من الصوت بشكل فعال.
