During the past week, daily AQI levels ranged from ‘Good’ to ‘Unhealthy’. Digana recorded poor AQI values continuously from 6th to 11th April, including an ‘Unhealthy’ daily average AQI value of 156 on 8th April. Nuwara Eliya recorded ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups’ daily average AQI values on 7th and 8th April, while Chilaw recorded the same on 6th April and Trincomalee on 7th April. ‘Moderate’ daily average AQI values were recorded in the majority of monitored areas.
Polluted air mainly entered Sri Lanka from the western direction via the Arabian Sea.
When considering weekly averages, Digana and Nuwara Eliya recorded ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups’ weekly average AQI values, while other areas recorded ‘Moderate’ weekly average AQI values.

During the past week, air quality became very poor across the country, with many areas recording “Unhealthy” daily AQI levels on the majority of days. Akurana and Chilaw recorded “Unhealthy” daily AQI levels continuously for the past seven days. The highest daily AQI value of 180 was recorded in Akurana on March 2.
The polluted air mass mainly entered the country from the north-eastern direction via the Bay of Bengal.
When considering weekly averages, Akurana, Digana, Battaramulla, and Chilaw recorded “Unhealthy” weekly AQI levels, while other monitored areas recorded “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” weekly average AQI values.

Very poor air quality was seen at both the beginning and the end of last week.
On 9 February, several areas including Akurana, Digana, Mirihana, Battaramulla, Chilaw, Kalawana, Mannar, Trincomalee, Jaffna, and Anuradhapura recorded Unhealthy air quality. On 14 February, Trincomalee and Jaffna again recorded Unhealthy levels. On 15 February, many of the same areas continued to experience Unhealthy air quality, while other places and days showed Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups or Moderate levels.
For the week overall, air quality ranged from Moderate to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups, with the highest weekly average recorded in Jaffna (139). In general, air quality remained poor throughout the week.
The polluted air mainly came from the north-eastern direction, passing over the Bay of Bengal, with air masses originating from the Indian Sub-continent.

On 7 February and 8 February, “Unhealthy” daily AQI values were recorded in several locations including Akurana, Digana, Kurunegala, Mirihana, Negombo, Chilaw, Battaramulla, Mannar, Trincomalee, Jaffna and Anuradhapura, with the highest pollution observed on 8 February. Jaffna recorded a “Very Unhealthy” AQI value (292) on 7 February. During most of the remaining days of the week, many locations recorded “Moderate” to “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” daily AQI values. This polluted air mass entered Sri Lanka from the northeast via the Bay of Bengal, originating from the Indian region.

Throughout the week, daily AQI values ranged from “Moderate” to “Unhealthy.” Higher pollution levels were mainly observed in the Northern and North-Central regions, and the deterioration toward the end of the week suggests increased pollution accumulation and transport over the country. Weekly average AQI levels ranged from “Moderate” to “Unhealthy.”

From 15 to 18 January, all monitored areas recorded “Unhealthy” daily AQI values. Trincomalee reported the highest daily AQI value of 192 on 17 January. This polluted air mass entered the country from the northeast, via the Bay of Bengal, driven by airflow carrying pollutants from the northern regions of India.
From 12 to 14 January, all monitored areas recorded “Moderate” daily AQI values, except Trincomalee and Jaffna on 14 January, which recorded “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” daily AQI values.
Considering weekly average AQI values, all monitored areas recorded “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” levels. Akurana-AV-Outdoor recorded the lowest weekly average AQI value of 101, while Trincomalee recorded the highest weekly average AQI value of 130.

From 05–07 January (especially 06 and 07 January), air quality across Sri Lanka worsened, with many areas recording Unhealthy and Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI levels. Several locations, including Akurana, Digana, Mirihana, Battaramulla, Chilaw, Mannar, Trincomalee, Jaffna, and Anuradhapura, recorded Unhealthy daily AQI values on these days.

The poor air quality was linked to polluted air carried by winds from the Bay of Bengal. From 08–11 January, air quality improved slightly as weather conditions changed due to a deep depression near the Bay of Bengal, helping to disperse the polluted air. During this period, AQI levels ranged from Good to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.

Based on weekly averages, Nuwara Eliya, Colombo, Mirihana, Battaramulla, Chilaw, Mannar, Trincomalee, Jaffna, and Anuradhapura recorded Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI levels, while other areas remained Moderate.

From 29–31 December, most areas across Sri Lanka recorded Unhealthy AQI values, with Unhealthy conditions being predominant.

From 01–04 January, air quality improved slightly, with most areas recording Moderate AQI values. However, Akurana (AV-Outdoor), Chilaw (CEA), Trincomalee, Jaffna, and Anuradhapura continued to record Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI values on several days. Trincomalee on 01 January and Anuradhapura on 02 January recorded Good AQI values. The polluted air affecting Sri Lanka appears to have last traveled over land across eastern and southeastern Indian states, including Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, before being transported over the Bay of Bengal.

When considering weekly average AQI values, Akurana (AV-Outdoor), Colombo (Gregory’s Road), Mirihana, Negombo, Battaramulla (CEA), Chilaw (CEA), Puttalam, Trincomalee, Jaffna, and Anuradhapura recorded Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups weekly average AQI values. Digana, Kurunegala, and Ambalanthota recorded Moderate weekly average AQI values.

After Cyclone Ditwah moved away from the country, polluted air began entering Sri Lanka from the Arabian Sea. From 01 to 03 December, many areas recorded “Unhealthy” AQI values. On 02 December, Chilaw reported a daily AQI of 200, which falls under the “Very Unhealthy” category.

After 03 December, some of the polluted air was cleared by cleaner air arriving from the direction of the Bay of Bengal. Following this, most areas recorded Moderate AQI values, while some locations even recorded Good daily AQI levels.

During the week, overall air quality across Sri Lanka ranged from “Good” to “Very Unhealthy.”

For the week as a whole, AQI values ranged from Moderate to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. Digana recorded the highest weekly AQI at 139, while Ambalanthota reported the lowest at 75.

On 27 November, Cyclone Ditwah entered Sri Lanka from the south and moved northward across the country. As it progressed, polluted air began to flow into the country behind its path, and by 30 November, Digana, Mirihana (Cleanco), and Battaramulla (CEA) reported Unhealthy daily AQI values.

During the week, overall air quality across Sri Lanka ranged from Good to Unhealthy. From 24 to 27 November, most locations recorded Good to Moderate daily AQI levels. From 27 to 30 November, daily AQI values rose comparatively.

For the week as a whole, AQI values ranged from Good to Moderate. Mirihana (Cleanco) recorded the highest weekly AQI at 95, while Akurana AV-Outdoor reported the lowest at 37.

After a week of poor Air quality the previous week (9-16 Nov), AQ has improved this week (17-23 November, 2025). Last week polluted air was transported from the northern parts of the Indian peninsula and travelled across the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal to Sri Lanka at times.

In contrast, from 17-23 November, winds coming from the northeast helped clear polluted air by the beginning of the week. Although some polluted air entered Sri Lanka again in the middle of the last week, AQI levels remained improved compared to the previous week across the country.

During the week, overall air quality across Sri Lanka ranged from "Good" to "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups". On 20 November, the AQI in Chilaw rose to 106, placing it in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category. Mirihana (Cleanco) reported the highest AQI of the week at 67, while Ambalantota recorded the lowest value at 30, indicating the cleanest air during this period. Most locations recorded Good to Moderate conditions, indicating generally favourable air quality.
