Naptune & Woodland Tea Factories Locals were reluctant to work for others, but later, only the supervisory staffs were recruited locally. One of them was our grandfather Mr. a day.

OUR EVOLUTION
After tea was introduced to, then Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, by the British, mostly Scotish, come from Scotland, dominated the industry for a substantial period, keeping the knowledge for themselves. There was no chance for that knowledge to disseminate out, due to the fact that the management was British and the workforce been Indians, brought only for labour, who were resident in the plantations itself. It is assumed that the knowhow drained out through them. Tea was initially grown in the higher and medium elevations, where coffee was grown, subsequent to the destruction of coffee by coffee rust. When the tea plantations started yielding, only those who were affluent established central manufacturing units in the most primitive manner, capable of handling their own and crop from neighboring plantations. But as the industry flourished estates having sufficient crop to feed a factory built their own. As time lapsed, planting knowledge disseminated to the low country too, probably through the locals already engaged in the industry under Europeans. Those who were capable, planted large extents with own manufacturing units. Alongside, small holdings too came in to existence, who couldn’t dream of own manufacturing units. Those who were not capable, of plant large extents, then emerged setting up manufacturing units to cater the small holders. Don Simon Hewakuruppu who dared to establish his own processing plant in 1935, in the low country with a capacity of 750lbs. The second generation, his two sons both having run together, one initiated on his own and the other developed the ancestral factory. Both of which were brought up to date, to the level the industry prevailed at that time. Alongside them, the 3rd generation ventured in and four factories with the most modern machinery, equipment and technology were developed. One of the four is now groomed with ISO quality and food safety certification, while the others are readying to be certified. Our capacity
