Hand Hygiene Day 2025 – A Successful Celebration at University Hospital KDU

The Department of Infection Prevention at University Hospital KDU successfully organized the Hand Hygiene Day program on 27th May 2025, in line with global efforts to promote effective infection prevention and control practices in healthcare settings.
The event featured interactive lecture presentations, a creative drama, and a hands-on practical skills session focused on the prevention of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). These activities aimed to strengthen awareness and reinforce good practices among hospital staff.

We were honoured by the presence of Director Medical Services, Deputy Director Administration, SO1 Medical Services, SO1 Administration, Consultant Microbiologist and Head of the Infection Prevention Department, Chief Nursing Officer and Matrons Other Officials from the Administration Medical Officer – Quality Assurance and Planning Medical Officer – Microbiology Infection Control Nursing Officers Medical Officers from Clinical Units, Nursing Officers, Physiotherapists, and Junior Support Staff. The program was generously sponsored, and the practical session was facilitated by B. Braun Pvt Ltd and Sunshine Healthcare Lanka Ltd, whose valuable support contributed to the success of the event. The program concluded with high engagement and a shared commitment to uphold hand hygiene as a cornerstone of patient safety.

On June 3rd, 2025, the tranquil halls of the University Hospital at KDU were graced with a serene Dhamma sermon delivered by Ven. Kukulpana Sudassi Thero. Centered on purifying the mind through the eradication of defilements, the sermon uplifted all present patients, staff, and dignitaries with a message of compassion and inner peace.

The International Nursing Day celebration at University Hospital, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, was held on the 14th of May 2025 at the hospital premises, under the theme “Our Nurses...Our Future…” caring for Nurses Strengthens the Economies. The event was graced by the chairperson, Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS).

Representing the spirit and dedication of the nursing staff, the celebration featured events showcasing their talents, offering a valuable opportunity for nurses to exhibit their skills and creativity. SINHALA AND TAMIL NEW YEAR CELEBRATION AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, GENERAL SIR JOHN KOTELAWALA DEFENCE UNIVERSITY
Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration for year 2025 was ceremonially held at the University Hospital premises from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm on 25th April 2025 with the participation of the members of UHKDU.

The event was graced by the Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS), Executive Director UHKDU, Dr. B. Jayan Mendis, along with Brigadier PS Thilakarathne – Director Medical Services, Colonel LCS Muthukumarana – Deputy Director Administration, HODs, Tri-Service Officers, Consultants, Medical and Administrative staff, and Civil Staff, who participated in the occasion.

The activities of the event commenced with traditional Avurudu rituals, including the lighting of the oil lamp and sharing of Avurudu sweetmeats, followed by a series of traditional Avurudu games that provided an unforgettable experience for all participants. Furthermore, various traditional Avurudu games and vibrant activities contributed to a festive atmosphere, allowing all members of UHKDU staff to fully engage in the joy of the Avurudu celebration, and a musical show was held in the evening adding an extra touch of glamour to the occasion.

Successful Medical Camp Held in collaboration with ITN on 26th February 2025

A multi discipline health camp was conducted by University Hospital KDU with collaboration with the welfare society of ITN at Chiththavivekasharamaya premises at Pannipitiya on 26th February 2025. This collaborative effort between the University Hospital (UHKDU) and ITN staff, was a major milestone in our health and wellness initiative marking the UK KDU commitment to serve the public.

We were honored by the presence of distinguished guests, including Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS), Chairmen of ITN- Mr.Priyantha Wedamulla, Director Medical Services Brigadier PS Thilakarathne, Director Administration Brigadier Rohan Wettasinghe, Surgeon Captain NPR Perera and many more esteemed consultants, tri-service officers, and dedicated medical and administrative staff from both the University Hospital and ITN.

The camp offered a wide range of medical services across multiple medical disciplines including internal medicine, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Dermatology Clinic, Orthopaedics Surgical, Dentistry, Obstetrics and gynaecology and Paediatrics A blood Donation Program was also carried out at the premises.

A special highlight was the live ‘Piniviyana’ program, offering valuable insights into the services available at the University Hospital, further educating the public on the diverse medical resources offered by the hospital.

The event’s success was a result of the active participation of both medical professionals and the ITN staff, making this initiative an invaluable contribution to the community.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING UNIT AT UHKDU - A LEAP IN PREVENTION OF BREAST CANCER IN SRI LANKA

Globally 1 in 8 women is affected by breast cancer, which accounts for nearly 30% of all cancer diagnoses among women. Early detection of breast cancer is crucial in minimizing morbidity and mortality.

Today marks a significant milestone in the fight against breast cancer as UHKDU inaugurated a Breast Health Centre, a dedicated space that will provide screening, education, and support to women to prevent Breast cancer with state of the art equipment. The centre was opened by the Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS), Director National Cancer Control Programme Dr Sugath Samaraweera, alongside Executive Director of UHKDU Dr. Jayan Mendis, Prof KASJ Balawardane, Director Medical Services Brigadier PS Thilakarathne, Director Administration Brigadier Rohan Wettasinghe, Surgeion Captain NPR Perera with the presence of eminent consultants and staff of UHKDU.
