I have weird obsessions; from time to time I immerse myself in particular things, which gives me some insights about life. Like for 3 months I would be a reader and then I am couch potato till I stumble upon something motivating. Then I’ll be watching thriller movies, and then maybe I would be into world of politics!!! (Not the Lankan politics, being safe 😉)

This time around I was into interviews of various kind of people who are successful, Yah! Of course, people don’t upload videos of the miserable failures and how they continue to fail 🫤.

So, a particular individual caught my eye, (Let’s skip the part where he was handsome! And as if that’s not the most attractive thing that attracted me 🫣) When he was sharing his success and how he built his career, I was really amazed; he kept on saying how people around were supportive, how even his failed relationships were wonderful!!! So on and so forth. He never said I struggled through this, people betrayed me, this happened to me that happened to me; the pandemic happened nothing at all.

Yah, for a moment I was like waaw he is faking everything!! He should have something bad in his life, for God’s sake!

But what I understood is that he had rejections, parents’ divorce, losing friends, and lot of other things. He always phrased it as learning. He was very much open to dark as well as light side of the world. He said “He was a part of dark and the light”. He appreciated people around him for all the light they’re giving to him and he recognized the darkness of people as of his. He navigated by appreciating the light. He wide opened his arm for the light of the people and he didn’t forget mention their light.

And when he was sharing all this appreciation with others in his life, I could see his face lit, and the people around him also kind of felt the energy.

I was thinking about my surroundings; we tend to see always the petty things and keep going on with our day by gossiping about that. That’s what keeps us thrive in our workplaces!! (at least mine). So you carry bad gossip about others day to day but act out like nothing is wrong. I gossip, you gossip and all of us gossip. I have seen that sometimes there might not be anything to gossip about, but people will somehow make up and turn a situation into gossip.

I believe people are resilient when they go through hard things. All I am trying to say is that, when things are hard or people are hard to you, try to appreciate the light and the dark. Which will make you more resilient, Don’t try to flip slightest light into dark, which is when you think world is a worst place.

Remember the RIPPLE EFFECT

Lately I am drowning with works, mentally I have piled up works back to back but I noticed that I have been distracted a lot and had a very difficult time to give attention to a task. Maximum I could sit for 10 minutes and then I would either scroll the phone or wander in my thoughts!

Difficulty in focused deep work, affected all my academic and clinical works!!!
And you what would follow next, all the emotions irritability, anxiousness, self-esteem issues and lot more. Life became hard.
Earlier I enjoyed challenges and I enjoyed learning.

I understood I have to change things around. I started noticing what I am doing in a day.
Guess what?!

Scrolling social media

I am a person I can detach from phone very easily. But noticed that I am latched to my phone and checking time to time.
Checked the time usage and 9 HOURS spent only in Facebook, Instagram and Tikotok.

Helloooo……

That’s the moment I setup time limit for the each app. 30 min for each app. It was hard first few days. Didn’t know what to do without those apps. Slept peacefully for first few days.
Then I noticed that I have an urgency to finish up all 30 min by morning. And 30 min felt like a long time. Decreased the timing to 25 min.
Slowly I felt like I am getting back to older self.
Now its 20 min for few apps and 10 min for few. Started reading more. Finished a book this week. Organized all my study materials and clinical works.

Today’s world is very distracting for all of us. Meaningful work is hard. Self-awareness and intentional behavior change is very important if anyone is seeking for a change in their life.

Change is always intentional work.

-focus , deep work, productivity, time management, socilal media detox .

For the past 5 months, I have been travelling by train for my clinical placement to a hospital outside of Colombo. They usually provide third-class tickets for this station. Yahh!!! That’s part of training, right?

One thing that surprised me was that most of the trains are approximately on time, and we can track the trains on an app for cancellations, changes of time, or new schedules every day! (Yup in Sri Lanka !! 😜)

So the journey began, first few days I was very anxious, went to the station way too early, got into the wrong trains and went to wrong destination, then figured how to go back to my location, got late for work, and most of all, was, drenched with sweat (I know!!! Early morning, starting the day with sweat 😔) and so many intrusive thoughts about contamination and dirt in the train!!!

It was unbelievably stressing and uncomfortable.

But did I have a choice?

Yes, I could go in an Uber or Pick me

Then why didn’t I?

Of cause thought about all the cost

And

Though I felt very uncomfortable travelling in the third class train, I loved the experience slowly, (Oops don’t look me like that 👀)

There were so many reasons why I like and you might not!!!

The people, the connection with the people without interaction just by non-verbal communication, the mild nuances in the behaviors of people and your psychology driven analysis and so so many things.

In psychology, there are so many ways we can tackle anxiousness. There are plenty of theories that talks about anxiousness

If the anxiousness is behaviorally driven, then doing the behavior repeatedly is the solution, even if you’re uncomfortable.

Your zone of tolerance increases, and you would actually learn some coping strategies to manage that anxiety.

None of us has an anxiety free life, everyone of us goes through anxiety, and we need to learn to manage our anxieties rather than living an anxiety free life.

Remember, all of us are anxious in new, challenging situations. It is very human behavior to be anxious. Facing the new, challenging situation is the most effective solution. Avoidance create more anxiety and keep you on your toe always.
