Drug-resistant dermatophyte infections (Trichophyton indotineae) are spreading across multiple continents including Asia, Europe, and North America.
Misuse of steroid-containing antifungal combination creams is one of the major drivers of this growing global health problem.

🦴 Prehistoric & Fossil Evidence of Ringworm-like Infection

The fossil you are referring to is:

🐭 Spinolestes xenarthrosus – a small mammal that lived about 125 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period in what is now Spain.

🕵️‍♂️ In 2011, exceptionally well-preserved fossils of this species revealed:

🧵 Preserved fur and skin structures

✂️ Areas of abnormal, broken, and stunted hairs

🔬 Microscopic hair damage consistent with a dermatophyte (ringworm-like) fungal infection

Researchers described these as “curious stumpy hairs” on the back of the animal. The hair shaft damage strongly resembled modern dermatophyte infections seen in mammals today.

💡 Why This Is Important:

🏺 It represents the oldest known fossil evidence of a skin fungal infection.

🌱 It shows that dermatophyte-like fungi were already infecting mammals 125 million years ago.

🧬 It suggests that host–fungus interactions evolved very early in mammalian history.

🌍 Global Message for Tinea Awareness:
“Ringworm is not a new disease. It has been infecting mammals since the time of dinosaurs.”
