Martyrdom follows the life of a guerrilla from beginning till end. For our great heroes they could never fully evade a heroes death. Martyrdom always accompanied them, not in the abstract but in the most concrete sense, as it hung from their necks. Death always loomed but fear had no place in the struggle for freedom. Though they could not outmaneuver death in the end, their martyrdom outmaneuvered the enemy every time. For even in death we refused to give our foes the upper hand. For even in death, we won. They lived amongst the spectre of death, but made of it a mockery, and courageously accepted it as their revolutionary contribution to the cause of liberation. Their cyanide capsule, a poisoned garland, conveying their commitment to the world: homeland or death.

We stood with families who are still waiting for answers. 35 years later, the silence remains deafening. But our people’s resilience remains steadfast.

Deep in Chemmani, Jaffna, just meters from the site where Krishanthi and her families bodies were exhumed in 1999, new human remains have recently emerged. By June 8, 2025, the site was officially declared a mass grave after significant findings, a complete skeleton was found in May, followed by 19 skeletal remains recovered in June during a court-ordered excavation, including the remains of three infants among them. These discoveries renew painful memories and raise urgent questions about the fate of hundreds more believed to buried here.

The first open Sri Lankan confirmation of such a site came in 1998, when Sri Lankan Army soldier Lance Corporal Somaratne Rajapakse testified in court that “300 to 400 bodies” of missing Tamils were buried in Chemmani.

Yet, the Sri Lankan government has stalled efforts through delays in funding and slow bureaucratic procedures, prompting fears of another cover-up.

From June 23rd-June 25th, Tamil youth organizations, along with community have organized a Protest for Justice, demanding justice for the mass graves and a UN-supervised excavation. Across the North and East a hartal strikes has been called, leading to a shutdown across the region.

The Tamil diaspora in Canada recently inaugurated the long-awaited Tamil genocide monument on May 10th, 2025. The memorial pays homage to the hundreds of thousands brutally massacred by the Sri Lankan state in the final months leading up to May 2009.

Though the general attitudes surrounding the monument have been positive, we must also give credence to the feelings of cognitive dissonance that many of us feel about a Tamil genocide monument in Canada beyond the symbolic significance it holds. There is merit to these mixed feelings. They are a genuine reaction to the multiple contradictions at play, which urge us to interrogate our past and to analyze both the positive and negative aspects of what has otherwise been lauded as a historic turning point in the 16 year-long quest for justice for the Tamil nation.

On the one hand, we are not blanket opposed to the Tamil genocide monument, while on the other hand, we hold no illusions about the contradictions present. Clarifying these positive and negative aspects is a way to correctly understand this current political moment in which the Tamil nation finds itself in its ongoing struggle for liberation.

16 years since thousands of people from the Toronto Tamil diaspora and their allies took over the gardiner expressway to bring attention to the genocidal actions of the Sri Lankan state and its accomplices.

Bystanders on the highway complained that we were stopping them from seeing their mothers on Mother’s Day. We were protesting because our mothers were dying in the thousands. A moment that was used to ridicule us in the media, is now looked up to as a monumental time in Toronto history.

Over 150,000 Tamil people were killed in the final months leading up to May 18th 2009.

Today, Tamils celebrated a momentous occasion as a Tamil Genocide Monument was unveiled to honour and preserve the memory of our people that perished in 2009.

On this International Women’s Day, we honour the strength, courage, and resilience of Tamil women.
In the de facto state of Tamil Eelam, Tamil women were at the heart of a transformative vision. They were leaders in a struggle that recognized true freedom could never be achieved without gender equality. The achievements of Tamil women during that time were a profound and radical step forward, demonstrating a future where women were at the core of political, military, and social leadership. These women redefined what it meant to fight for sovereignty- not just through battle, but by fundamentally shifting the role of women in our society.
The loss of our de facto state was also the loss of a transformative vision- one where the rights of Tamil women were at the forefront of our struggle. Yet, the legacy of Tamil women endures, living on through the ongoing struggles of our mothers and sisters today.
In the homeland, Tamil mothers still lead protests, searching for their missing children, husbands, and family members taken as political prisoners. They continue to fight, despite years of trauma, ongoing violence, intimidation by the state, and systemic oppression. Their force continues to drive the Tamil struggle for freedom forward.
On this day, let us honour Tamil women in the diaspora, in the homeland, and those who led our movement. You continue to fight not just to break chains, but to dismantle every system that seeks to silence us.
To Tamil women, we honour you. Your fight is our fight. Your legacy is our strength, and we will carry it forward, for you, for us, and for the future we continue to build.

OTD in 1948, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) won its nominal independence from the British empire, marking the end of over 400 years of colonial domination. Though, unlike many anti-colonial and national liberation struggles waged across the third world at the time, Ceylon’s independence was not the result of a powerful struggle to break free from the yoke of colonialism. Instead, independence was merely a shift from empire rule to a bourgeois national state, with the former colonial structure remaining largely intact. Even so, genuine resistance to British imperialism on the island would’ve been futile to a colonial power that had already been severely weakened by fascism in Europe during WWII, and whose days of subjugation over the islands’ people became numbered as a result. The independence of Ceylon was inevitable and brought about by an opportunistic Sinhala and Tamil emerging ruling-class who usurped power, leaving the oppressed of all communities at the whim of a new native elite.

The power gained from an adopted colonial state structure gave impetus to the dominant Sinhala elite to unleash unbridled chauvinism and racism towards all other peoples. Eelam Tamils in particular were condemned to decades of national oppression forming into a protracted 77 year-long genocide. Today, the Sinhala ruling elite continue to foment racial antagonisms, pitting communities of the island against each other. The colonial-style tactic of divide and rule has been at the core of preserving power for the Sinhala elite, which is reflected in the continued occupation of the Tamil homeland. As Colombo commemorates its bogus independence day today, the Tamil homeland marks the same day with hartal strikes and black flags, rejecting the legitimacy of the Sri Lankan state.

The Tamil national question is an island-wide question. It is in the best interests of the Sinhala masses to see, with disgust, the ongoing national oppression of the Tamil people and other communities, and to work towards its immediate termination. The conclusion remains the same. Achieving genuine freedom for all peoples will be premised first on the right of Tamils to self-determination.

GOFUNDME LINK IN BIO.

Cyclone Fengal has engulfed the Tamil homeland, leaving tens of thousands displaced as floods have left communities across the island devastated. In under a week, approximately 200,000 people have been affected by the climate disaster in the North-East.
The cyclone struck on Nov 27th, Maveerar Naal. Despite relentless rains, powerful winds, and flooding, the storm was unable to dampen the will of Eelam Tamils as they braved through yet another arduous journey, to commemorate the martyrs of the Tamil liberation struggle. The Tamil people once again remained determined and united, gathering at desecrated cemeteries across the North and East.
Since then, many have been displaced as their homes have been rendered uninhabitable with limited safe locations across the North-East. 16 people have been killed, while several children are missing due to the storm’s brutal impact.
Our community has repeatedly demonstrated its resilience, rising from the ashes of tragedy. Just in the last few decades alone, Tamils have endured immense hardship, bearing the brunt of systemic oppression and scapegoating.
During the COVID relief campaign in 2020 and the economic downturn in 2022, our unity has made a difference. That same spirit drives us now to support those hardest hit, particularly in Vanni, Trinco, Batticaloa, and Amparai.
How will help reach those in need?
We’ve partnered with Vidiyal, to ensure funds are used for essentials and livelihoods. Vidiyal, a grassroots organization, has long addressed the material grievances of our people. It’s the same group we supported during COVID-19 (2020) and economic crisis relief (2022). As always, we will provide proof of funds at the end of this campaign. Our goal is to raise $3000 CAD which will provide at least 200 families with food items that can last up to a month.
TFC is not a charity, but our goal has always been to address and improve our community’s material grievances, in the short and long term.

Lt. Shankar was the first cadre to die in combat on November 27th 1982 after a bullet tore through his stomach in a shootout with the occupying Sri Lankan army. 7 years later, on 27 November 1989, LTTE cadres gathered secretly in the jungles near Nithikaikulam in Manal Aru, Mullaitivu District to remember their fallen comrades.

Maaveerar Naal means different things for different people. But one thing that can’t be disputed, is that it’s for our sisters and brothers that picked up arms for a greater cause; for the people, for their nation, for homeland, sovereignty and self-determination.

Those who had picked up the gun for the freedom of their people, are still directly targeted by the Sri Lankan state. Former Tigers are constantly monitored and tracked. They are being given ultimatums to work for the state or risk being arrested, tortured and killed.

As we approach our 16th year since 2009, there have been many Tamil and non-Tamil individuals and groups that have tried to discredit the movement, there have been many groups that have tried to talk about the struggle for a Free Eelam void of the Tamil Tigers. Let’s not be mistaken, these groups and individuals do not work for the masses, they work for the state and are playing solely with their own geo-political interests.

As we reflect and remember today on Maaveerar Naal, let’s also remember that there is no distinction between the political aspirations of the people and the Tigers. It will always be, the people are the Tigers, and the Tigers are the people. Our fight does not exist only on November 27th, but year round.

The Tamil Eelam struggle continues to be under attack....
