My visit to Kalmunai North Base Hospital and the on 21st of April 2026.
Kalmunai Base Hospital is very close to my heart because it was the first hospital practiced as a doctor after my internship in Mathara. I went to Kalmunai in 1998 and served as a medical officer in the male medical ward. I served there about one and half years as the incharge of the ward 2. 1998-1999 was the height of the terrorism no one traveled after 4pm , not even an ambulance. There were no Specialists and inward patients were managed by MBBS doctors. During that period I realized the war was not in the heart of common Tamil, Muslim or Sinhala people, but it was a war for power grabbing people.
Nurses in the ward two taught me Tamil and conversations were mainly done in English with one or two words of Sinhala. There was no mobile phones and communication was by telephone.
There are few names that I remember from my Kalmunai time especially nurses. That is Mrs Wadiwel and Mr Nasrudeen. Although I lost contact with them after 2000, I was able to be contacted with Mr Nasrudeen, Ward 2 male nursing officer.
Mr Nasrudeen has retired from nursing survive as a matron few months ago. I fondly remember the visit to his home in Maradamuni and the tasty beef Samosa .
It was a great pleasure to meet Mr Nasrudeen at the hospital. The hospital has developed greatly. There are specialists including cardiologist and eye specialist.
The buildings are wards have been improved greatly, yet the corridors were the same.
It was indeed a pleasure to see the ward and the staff.
Best wishes to Kalmunai people
