KidsToxLK was recently showcased in the newsletter of the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians, helping to raise awareness among paediatricians across the country. The feature highlighted the ongoing burden of childhood poisoning in Sri Lanka and the critical importance of accessing accurate, context-specific toxicology advice to improve patient outcomes. For paediatricians, awareness of KidsToxLK offers significant benefits.

On the 6th of April, an engaging and highly informative academic session titled “Funding Your Research: From Implementation to Publication” was successfully held at the Board Room of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. The session took place from 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm and brought together over 50 participants, including faculty members, clinicians, and junior doctors, reflecting strong interest in strengthening research capacity within the medical community.

This event was collaboratively organized by the Research Management Committee of the Faculty of Medicine and the KidsToxLK Paediatric Poison Information and Research Centre, highlighting a shared commitment to advancing high-quality research and evidence-based practice in Sri Lanka.

The KidsToxLK Paediatric Poison Information Centre successfully conducted an engaging and educational webinar titled “Hidden Dangers of the Sea: A Practical Guide to Marine Envenomations” on 27th March, bringing together over 95 doctors from across Sri Lanka and several international settings. This timely session addressed an often under-recognized yet clinically significant area in paediatric toxicology—marine envenomation, with a strong focus on practical management in resource-limited and frontline clinical settings.

The webinar featured Ms Carine Marks, Director of the Tygerberg Poison Information Center, South Africa, as the keynote speaker. She delivered an insightful and highly practical presentation covering identification of common venomous marine species, clinical manifestations of envenomation in children, evidence-based first aid measures and emergency management and when to escalate care.

This session was part of the Workshop for Emergency Medicine Trainees, held on 16th March from 8:30 AM to 1:45 PM at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), University of Colombo. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: 𝗣𝗛𝗠𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀

In a significant step towards reducing the burden of paediatric snakebite in rural Sri Lanka, a community-based education initiative led by Public Health Midwives (PHMs) is gaining strong momentum in prevention, first aid awareness, and early response.

Recognising that children in rural communities are among the most vulnerable to venomous snakebites, PHMs have stepped forward as frontline educators. Through household visits, mothers’ group discussions, antenatal clinics, and community outreach sessions, they are delivering targeted, practical education to parents and caregivers.
