The inaugural session of the Student Parliament of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, held at the Old Parliament Chamber of the Presidential Secretariat, marked a meaningful step in nurturing responsible future leaders. Together with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, I had the opportunity to engage with these young minds as they experienced the essence of parliamentary democracy in a setting rich with history and national significance.
This initiative, jointly organized by the Department of Communication of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, the Presidential Secretariat, and the Ministry of Education, aims to inspire students to understand how laws are made, why accountability matters, and what it means to lead with integrity.
A person who is not law-abiding can never be a lawmaker. Upholding the law is not only the foundation of governance but also the cornerstone of character. Every citizen, especially those aspiring to lead, must commit to building a disciplined, fair, and law-abiding society.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya shared an important message — that education should not be confined to examinations but must instead shape individuals who can think critically, act compassionately, and contribute meaningfully to a better world. The students’ thoughtful questions reflected both curiosity and maturity, proving that this initiative truly empowers the next generation.
The session also included valuable insights from Mr. Chaminda Kularatne, Acting Secretary General of Parliament, who spoke on women’s representation in Parliament, and Prof. A. Sarwesvaran from the University of Colombo, who delivered an engaging lecture on law. Additionally, Mr. Dharmasiri Gamage and Mr. Subash Roshana Gamage from the Presidential Secretariat discussed national initiatives such as the President’s Fund and the Clean Sri Lanka Programme, linking them to everyday civic life.
Following the ceremonial inauguration, the Speaker and Members of the Student Parliament took their oaths and assumed their roles with confidence. Their enthusiasm and sense of purpose were inspiring — a clear reminder that leadership begins with understanding responsibility.
My sincere appreciation goes to Major Nadeeka Dangolla, Principal Ms. Shashikala Senadheera, the academic staff, parents, and all who contributed to this event.
If our students continue to engage with governance in this spirit, we can look forward to a future shaped by citizens who value justice, discipline, and service to others.
