Spread a little love SALL is an initiative that focuses on spreading much needed love at the Cancer Hospital Maharagama~ Looking back, I think this was the day SALL was born. Kamilka

Spread a little love, is not an NGO nor an Org, I would like to simply call it a Human Mission, that brings about an army of soldiers, whom in return rally in support to make this project happen, year after year. It had a humble start, back in 1998 when I carried a bucket of Sago to help my aunt during an alms giving, and that December, my mother and I went back and this time, with a pine tree stuck to a flower pot and a few friends and their guitars. It was not on social media till after 2014, when someone suggested we open access to people through Facebook, and since then the outpour of support has been overwhelming. SALL primarily concentrates on reaching out to the Cancer Hospital Maharagama. The yearly projects are three-fold.
- The main event Each December usually second sunday of the month
- Calypso Bands and song requests day usually in March
- Bhakthee Geetha for the patients and Staff of the hospital usually in June or July

mid year, we also sponsor medication for patients whose details are forwarded to us by the hospital, at the moment we have 11 patients whose monthly medication is sponsored via the money i raise through SALL. We sponsor natural hair wigs for patients, and have since 2015 to date sponsored five wigs. Although the outline is mentioned, I have as and when needed branched out, to reach out to situations that needed urgent help. SALL raised over half a million in funds for flood victims in the country in may of 2016. To put it simply, SALL is not just about giving, but joining of hands, and bringing together positivity, bringing hearts together so that we may give our blessings back. Please do share! For any info, drop a message! Much love.

We are passing LKR 1,700,000/= in total cash raised this far. Up to now, the cash expenses and where it was delivered have been shared below.

We are going to relevant centers ourselves and doing the distributions to the displaced people direct.

Thank you for your mammoth support thus far.

Today we are aiming to make bulk purchases for 500 care packs, and will utilize the money for this purpose.

Please keep donating.

Thank you so much for donating, and rallying behind this urgent appeal. We will be making more purchases in the next two days and will aim for a midweek distribution again, as I do think the donations will slow down as the week progresses.

What we saw was humanity in crisis, some breast feeding mothers, some with their pets, families having lost their homes, some having homes entirely ripped away. Most of them in the same clothes that they waded through flood waters two days back.

As I sit in my home, safe in comfortable clothes, with a fan over my head having just had dinner, I’m reminded how absolutely blessed we are, and how often we take our graves for granted.

Please keep donating, we have so much more to do.

Be safe.

Hello community, hope this post finds you all well in 2024. It’s been a while. We have in the quiet completed a small project during Christmas which was spearheaded by Renuka Perera ( Ammi ).

SALL joined hands with Srilankan CSR arm “Srilankan Cares”, in sponsoring fifty gifts and the calypso band, for a city excursion and high tea at Galle Face Hotel which was organized by ( Srilankan Cares ).

The sum totaling to LKR 110,000/= was from three donors, whom we approached personally.

Just to keep you notified, SALL not being registered as a Non profit organization has imposed a lot of challenges, with regards to raising funds. During the last fund raiser many times, the bank account got flagged internally and then blocked several times, as the account is a joint account with my name being the primary holder.

Since it’s inception, SALL work has happened through family and friends and over the years the community grew but I never wanted it to become an organization, and preferred that it operated in the organic manner in which it does.

However with the current situation, it’s come to a situation where we cannot raise funds without being blocked, hence why projects happen through known networks rather than through public calls for donations. This severely minimizes our capacity to raise funds, but until such time SALL is registered we will continue to silently work through smaller projects.

If you wish to be part of the network of donors whom we can personally approach please drop a message.

Kind regards.

Kamilka

Hello Community, here is a little update.
I’ve been quiet as I’ve recently given birth, and life has turned a new leaf, where all the work I take on, now has taken a back seat as I nurture my sweet girl, who was born in July.

I think of all the good we have woven over the years and you are part and parcel of that joy.

💓 love always,

Kamilka

Cancer Hospital Dog Update.
11th November is 12.21 pm.

This is a long read, please bear with me. Im going to break this down, to understand the context.

A story went viral. From the many posts I saw, received, This what the posts / media / said.

In brief,
- dogs are severely beaten by security
- dogs are beaten to death inside the hospital
- one pregnant doggy was beaten to death and she birthed still born puppies abs succumbed to her injuries.

SALL didn’t share / comment or post about the incident because none of these stories were verified from people who were actually there and witnessed.

Today the 11th Of November Friday, we made a visit to the cancer hospital at 10.45am and we were there till 11.35am.

Let’s understand the context, because we cannot and should not isolate and incident instead strive to make sense of anything in totality, which makes our understanding more cohesive.

- Apeksha hospital known as Cancer hospital is the only National hospital in the island totally dedicated towards cancer patients

- it’s not a planned construction or layout instead it’s a MAZE of Adhoc construction, with various labyrinth of wards and buildings that have mushroomed

- these unplanned set up brings with it enormous challenges in terms of lack of parking, circulation and proper space required for a hospital therefore IT IS OVER CROWDED ALWAYS.

- the location is in a densely residential area of Maharagama, where the hospital does not have a complete secure peripheral wall right around. Whilst some areas are covered, there’s still plenty of ways for animals to get in and out.

- it’s poorly funded, where the whole system struggles to survive. When you go in there from the doctors to the nurses to its attendants to its basic janitors, everyone is not given the due necessities to do their job. I know from years of visiting, how each of these people try to do their level best with Very little.

- like any institution, this too is not without its politics. Not without its corrupt people, but there still lies good people trying to make the best of what they have.

How do I know this? I have been volunteering at the cancer hospital since 1998, that’s how I know. Over 23 years of going in and out, I know its areas by heart, so does my mother.

The animals.

- there has always been dogs / cats in and out of the hospital
- several animal organization have overtime
Done sterilization projects over the years
- due to lack of secure walls many outside animals come in for food, and make themselves at home inside the hospital
- so many times I have walked over dogs inside wards, under beds, seen dog / cat p**p in corridors Aswel as wards. This happens. Imagine how unhygienic it is.
- there has been recorded incidents of people dumping puppies and kittens at the hospital
- the dogs are territorial and occupy certain parts of the hospital, where they would attack others dogs if they break their mutual territories.
- dog fights I have seen, plenty of times

THE INCIDENT. Based on people who actually saw what happened on the 8th November night. ( we spoke to them
Today, and due to privacy reasons I shall not name them ).

- 8th night Security staff rounded some dogs around ward 21 area, and was seen beating them quite severely
- what caused this beating down: no one gave us one answer. So I will leave it as we don’t know.

WE COMPLETELY CANNOT CONDONE THIS INHUMANE ACT OF VIOLENCE towards innocent animals.

- some said dogs are extremely vigilant at night and attack staff or patients who walk in the dark, and this beating was caused by such an attack on a doctor where the said person called security for help and the beating happened.

PREGNANH DOG DYING DUE TO BEING BEATEN. Categorically untrue.

- we visited the mama doggy who is kept safe in an area with her two surviving pups. Fed and protected.

- those who witness the attack could not be exactly sure if the said pregnant dog was beaten.

- they also did not see her birthing the puppies that night.

WHAT WE THINK HAPPENED, based on what we saw today.

- she may have birthed soon after caused by the stress of being around tne beating. Or hearing other dogs cry in anguish.

- she has given birth inside a ward.

- dog loving matron / nurse of that said ward has also seen still born pups. But two healthy pups remain and she was feeding when we saw her at 11.30am.

- by 12.15 pm today EMBARK picked up this mother and her two pups and removed them from the hospital.

CONCLUSION.

- pregnant dog was not killed.
- don’t write long poems or share or get agitated without checking to verify an incident.
- social media is a powerful tool, let’s use it responsibly.

SALL vehemently condemn the beating of the animals, this should not have happened, such cruelty should not take place.

But we must also underhand,

It’s a hospital where very sick people are hanging to their lives, vulnerable and existing in an extremely under funded set up, where emotions are high, frustrations are higher and in a situation and context such as this,

- we can’t look at from just one point of view
- in the hospital the well-being of its patients is paramount
- no hospital would like to have animals inside and having to deal with animal f***s
- no hospital would encourage stray animals

I hope this shed light. I will also share pics of the dogs Some of whom still got the collar from the sterilization project we carried out two weeks ago.

We just completed an eight hour run of Sterilization and Vaccination drive of stray cats and dogs in the Apeksha Hospital Premises.

With the help of AWPA The Animals’ Welfare and protection Association Sri Lanka who organized the team of vets and support staff, a total of 35 cats and dogs were de-sexed today.

The total sum of this project shall be sponsored by SALL.

Thank You Randy for volunteering your time today.

SALL obtained the approval of the Hospital Director and PHI in charge to carry out this work today.

🙏🏼🙏🏼

once AWPA Shares the bill value with us I will update on the total value of project.

Hello SALL FAMILY.
A new project

Tomorrow the 30th October SALL will be teaming up with AWPA The Animals’ Welfare and protection Association Sri Lanka to carry out a sterilization programme for the stray animals in the hospital vicinity.

Having a large number of cats and dogs, without sterilization in and around the hospital premises has become a menace and before anyone makes a decision to remove dogs, we have decided to carry this project for everyone’s benefit.

Whilst we cannot stop animals from
Coming into the hospital, we hope the sterilization will help aid the system.

This is carried out utilising cash in the account already, all bills and expenditures shall be made transparent once the project is completed.

Have a lovely Weekend.
