❇️*Aromatherapy* ❇️
is the practice of using aromatic plant oils and extracts for the purpose of wellbeing.
In detail , according to NAHA (National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy), they define "aromatherapy as the therapeutic application or the medical use of essential oils for healing".
The resulting plant ‘essence’ or essential oil can be diffused, inhaledor applied topically according to the therapeutic requirement.
Depending on the plant, the essential oil is removed from the plant either by distillation or extracted using solvent.
It is taken from the flower, leaf, root, peel, bark or
resin individually or from the whole herb.
The time taken for production, its viscosity, colour, odour, constituents, and the cost to produce the essential oil will depend on the plant and will vary from each other.
Essential oils are categorised in to different levels of *‘notes’* depending on their individual properties.
🔸Top note – The essential oils are light, evaporate quickly, fast acting and
uplifting. When used in a ‘blend’ of different oils, the top notes are usually the
first you smell.
⏺Eg - lemon, tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils
🔸Middle note – The essential oils are warm in fragrance and balancing in nature, they can take a few minutes for the effect to be evident.
⏺Eg - Chamomile, Black pepper and Lavender essential oils
🔸Base note – The essential oils are heady, grounding and powerful. They will be
present for a long period in the system.
⏺Eg- Frankincense & Rose
Aromatherapy works in two ways. The first is that the olfactory (smell) system is stimulated when the essential oil is inhaled and this signal is sent to the limbic system (brain) that controls emotions and memories.
Chemicals are released triggering, relaxing or stimulating responses particular to the oil.
*Secondly*,
when an essential oil is applied topically it enters the bloodstream and is then carried around the body.
According to the study it has been found that the essential oils in aromatherapy has shown marked importance in medical, massage, cosmetic, olfactory and psychological aspects.
Which has also led us to classify aromatherapy into branches.
1. Medical aromatherapy
2. Massage aromatherapy
3. Cosmetic aromatherapy
4. Olfactory aromatheraphy
5. Psycho aromatherapy
