Why is a catheter needed with prostatic enlargement?
1-Urinary Retention
As the prostate enlarges, it can compress the urethra, making it difficult or impossible to urinate. This leads to acute urinary retention, which is painful
2-Bladder Emptying Assistance
In chronic BPH cases, some men can't fully empty their bladder, even if they can urinate a little. A catheter helps completely drain the bladder and prevent infection, stones, or kidney problems.
3- Before or After Surgery
A catheter is often used before surgery. It's also used after surgery to allow the urinary tract to heal and ensure normal flow resumes.
4-When Medications Fail
If drugs like alpha-blockers or 5-alpha reductase inhibitors don’t relieve symptoms, catheterization might be necessary while considering other treatments.
