Strengthening Professionalism and Surgical Care
- LMDC Engages Health Facilities in Nimba and B**g Counties

Over the weekend, the Liberia Medical and Dental Council conducted strategic high-level professional engagements in Nimba and B**g Counties. The discussions focused on customer service in healthcare, ethics in medical practice, the LMDC online portal registration process, and an overview of the current state of surgical services in Liberia. The engagements were aimed at reinforcing the Council’s mandate to regulate and strengthen medical and dental practice across the country.

Bringing together stakeholders from various health facilities in B**g and Nimba Counties, LMDC emphasized the importance of professionalism, respectful communication, and ethical conduct in delivering quality healthcare. Health practitioners were reminded that clinical competence must go hand in hand with compassion, accountability, and adherence to ethical standards.

Discussions centered on patient rights, confidentiality, informed consent, and professional boundaries. LMDC stressed that strong customer service practices are not separate from medical care but are integral to patient satisfaction, trust, and improved health outcomes.

Healthcare workers actively participated in the sessions, sharing experiences and challenges they face in delivering patient-centered services. The engagements created space for reflection and renewed commitment to ethical excellence.

A key highlight of the engagements was practical guidance on the LMDC online portal registration process. The Council walked participants through the digital registration platform, explaining how practitioners can apply for licensure, renew licenses, update professional records, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

The digital platform is part of LMDC’s broader modernization effort aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and accessibility of regulatory services nationwide. Health professionals were encouraged to promptly register and maintain updated credentials to avoid lapses in licensure.

Participants welcomed the clarification and hands-on explanations, noting that the portal simplifies processes that were previously time-consuming.

LMDC also provided an overview of the current state of surgical services in Liberia. Discussions examined workforce capacity, infrastructure gaps, referral systems, and the need for continuous professional development in surgical practice.

While acknowledging the progress made in strengthening surgical care, LMDC noted persistent challenges such as limited specialist availability, equipment constraints, and the uneven distribution of services between urban and rural areas. The Council reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with county health teams and partners to improve standards, supervision, and compliance in surgical practice.

During a meeting with the B**g County Health Team Office, discussions reinforced consistent national messaging on ethics, customer service, and regulatory compliance.

County health authorities in B**g County expressed appreciation for LMDC’s outreach, noting that direct engagement strengthens coordination between the regulatory body and frontline health facilities. The session also provided an opportunity to discuss local challenges and explore practical solutions tailored to the county’s needs.

By conducting these engagements in both Nimba and B**g Counties, LMDC demonstrated its commitment to decentralizing regulatory awareness and ensuring that standards are upheld across Liberia. The Council underscored that effective regulation requires collaboration, communication, and continuous engagement with healthcare providers at every level.

As LMDC continues its county outreach initiatives, the focus remains clear: promoting ethical practice, strengthening customer service culture, modernizing regulatory systems, and supporting the improvement of surgical services nationwide.

Through sustained engagement and partnership, LMDC is advancing its mission to safeguard public health and uphold professional excellence in Liberia’s healthcare system.

LMDC Takes Major Leap Into the Digital Era, Launches New System to Modernize Clinical Oversight

The Liberia Medical and Dental Council will unveil its new digital platform on Wednesday, December 10, marking a major step in its effort to modernize healthcare regulation in the country. The system, developed by Creator Matrix, is designed to streamline essential processes and strengthen oversight of medical and dental practice nationwide.

The launch of the LMDC digital platform is expected to deliver several key advantages. It will simplify licensing and registration, reduce paperwork, and shorten processing times for health professionals. It will improve the Council’s ability to track compliance, monitor practitioners, and maintain accurate records. The platform will also support continuous professional development by making training and regulatory updates more accessible. Collectively, these improvements are positioned to strengthen public trust, enhance service delivery, and contribute to a more efficient and accountable healthcare regulatory system in Liberia.

The initiative follows a commitment made by Dr. Ayun K. Cassell, III during his induction as Chairperson of the Council in July. At that ceremony, he pledged to lead a shift toward digital operations that would enhance how the Council regulates clinical services and engages with health practitioners.

Dr. Cassell also highlighted the importance of evidence-based decision making and the value of adopting technology that improves efficiency and transparency across all regulatory functions. According to him, stronger systems will help reinforce public confidence and ensure that Liberians receive competent, ethical, and compassionate care.

That pledge helped pave the way for a strategic planning retreat held in August, which focused on creating a long term roadmap for 2026 to 2030. Convened under the theme “Strengthening Regulation and Advancing Quality Healthcare through Innovation and Digital Transformation: A Roadmap for 2026 to 2030,” the gathering brought together Council members, sector leaders, and technical partners to define a clear and ambitious agenda for the years ahead.

LMDC Leadership Visits B**g County, Engages Health Stakeholders

The Chairperson of the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC), Dr. Ayun K. Cassell, III, along with the Registrar General, Dr. Augustus Garlet Quiah, paid a working visit to B**g County over the weekend as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration with local health stakeholders.

The visit brought together the LMDC Regional Administrator and the B**g County Health Team in a stakeholder meeting focused on fostering a Technical Working Group (TWG). The TWG will play a pivotal role in enhancing the inspection and regulation of health facilities across the county, ensuring compliance with professional and ethical standards in healthcare delivery.

As part of the mission, the LMDC leadership also toured a three-acre parcel of land in B**g County, purchased during the administration of Prof. Robert Kpoto. The site has been earmarked for the construction of a permanent regional office to decentralize LMDC’s operations and improve accessibility for health practitioners in the region.

Dr. Cassell underscored the importance of the initiative, noting that decentralization will not only strengthen monitoring and inspection but also expand support to healthcare providers across rural counties.

The B**g County Health Team welcomed the LMDC delegation and pledged continued collaboration in ensuring quality healthcare standards are upheld throughout the county.

A lady identified as Dorothy Kou, also referred to as Ma Haji of Paynesville, Redlight community, behind Ma Kebbeh Gas Station, was turned over to the Liberia National Police yesterday for performing a surgical incision at her house on little Alice Dahn, a child brought from Zehglay, Nimba County, that affected Alice’s spine and preventing the minor from walking.

Dorothy (Ma Haji) claimed she was attempting to remove what she referred to as a "witch" from the child's back. However, doctors at the JFK Pediatric Unit confirmed that the child was actually suffering from Spina bifida.

Spina bifida occurs when a baby's spine and spinal cord do not develop properly in the womb, leaving a gap in the spine. It is a type of neural tube defect. The neural tube is the structure that eventually develops into the baby's brain and spinal cord.

Dorothy Kou was turned over to the police along with Daniel Teah, the grand-uncle of Alice, a resident of Smythe Road community for serving as accomplice.

Pharmacy Closed Over Child’s Death From Unauthorized Circumcision

The Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) has shut down a pharmacy identified as Little by Little, operated by Mr. Moses Amara in the 72nd Community, behind the Conex Gas Station. The closure follows reports that the facility was allegedly involved in an unauthorized circumcision procedure that led to the death of a child about two-month-old, who reportedly bled to death without being referred for professional medical care.

The LMDC’s Medical and Research Director, Mr. Joseph Colmah, warned individuals impersonating as health practitioners to desist from such dangerous practices, emphasizing that the Council will pursue anyone engaged in medical quackery. He further cautioned the public to always seek care from licensed clinics, health centers, and hospitals within their communities.

The LMDC has urged the public to assist in locating Mr. Moses Amara, who is wanted to answer to questions regarding the alleged incident.

LMDC Testifies in Trial of Alleged Fake Doctor, Sam Worlobah

Monrovia – Prosecution has begun in the trial of Mr. Sam Worlobah, accused of posing as a medical doctor and performing an unauthorized surgery that led to the death of Mr. Samuel P. Kollie at the unaccredited Lofa Medical Service Clinic in Paynesville.

Taking the witness stand as the first prosecution witness, Dr. Augustus Garlet Quiah, Registrar General of the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC), was thoroughly cross-examined by both prosecution and defense lawyers. The session concluded with questions from the jury and the presiding judge of Criminal Court “B.”

Dr. Quiah outlined Liberia’s regulatory medical standards and stressed that Mr. Worlobah was never licensed as a medical doctor. Instead, he was licensed as an Operating Room Technician (ORT) with a role limited to assisting surgeons with tasks such as handling instruments, ensuring machines are functional, and maintaining sterilization.

Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, Joseph Colmah, Clinical and Research Director at LMDC, issued a stern warning to those impersonating as a medical professionals to take note that LMDC is coming for them.
