An advisor of mine married at age 65.
One time I was catching up with him and he disclosed to me why he got married at his age.
"Mr. Roberts, after making all the money, and having children; you realize that the most important thing in life is to have COMPANIONSHIP. A companion to share life with. Whether someone is financially rich or poor, life is lonely when you have no one to be with"
That right there was powerful. He is a man. He did not say he married for s*x as some young men full of energy and desire jump into saying. S*x has its place though in marriage.
My advisor was a widower, his wife passed on years ago. His kids are all grown, he just wanted a best friend he could call wife. He married a mature lady and the two look wonderful as a couple, ever smiling and warm.
He summarized the essence of marriage in one word: Companionship.
COMPANIONSHIP - is when you have someone who has seen you at your best and at your worst and still stays. Companionship is having someone to be vulnerable with, someone with whom you can be spiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally naked and unashamed. Companionship is having someone who wants to know what's on your mind, someone you can tell how your day was, your memories, and the things that fascinate or disturb you. Companionship is having someone interested in everything about you, not just your body. Companionship is having someone to laugh and cry with, someone you can be yourself with, someone who enjoys your company.
When we are in our 20s, 30s, and even 40s; this is the time many prioritize the wrong things: MONEY, S*X, and PUBLIC ACCOLADES. This is the time when many who are married neglect their family as they chase after MONEY and WORK. Making money never ends. When you age, will you be sad that you pushed your family away just to make a living? Don't work so hard for your family yet lose your family... This is the time many get lured by lust and cheat on the one they love, they mess up a good relationship or marriage they have with someone who really loves them just because of pleasure. When your va**na can't get wet anymore, when your p***s can't rise to the occasion, will you regret breaking your home for a few minutes rush to an or**sm?... This is the time many seek attention from misleading friends, and short-term career awards and abandon their family. When you age, are replaced by new talent in the career, and all your friends have gone, will you stare at the lifeless trophies and wish you could turn back time so that you give your family time?
If you have found someone who has committed to living his/her life with you till death, don't mess it up. Don't mess up the closest human relationship you can ever get. Don't mess up your marriage.
Take your phone and scroll. You will notice that most of the people you chat with in 2024 are not the same ones you chat within 2023. And if some friends have remained, they are on and off. Every other person will walk in and out of your life when they need you or when they remember you; but your spouse will be there with you every day, through it all.
When your children have moved out, the house will feel empty. You will need someone to share life with and to be with you; not once in a while, but for keeps.
Companionship. Companionship is good for your well-being. It is the reason why even most single parents long to have someone. Yes, they have kids, but they want an adult to have adult conversations with, someone to connect with.
