For many patients with blood cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, a blood stem cell transplant – made possible by lifesaving donations – is the best option for survival. According to the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, 70% of patients who need a blood stem cell transplant don't have a fully matched donor in their family, leading them to rely on the National Marrow Donor Program.

As part of our larger HCA Healthcare network, we’re proud to help meet this critical need through the HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network. This extensive network is among the largest providers of unrelated bone marrow donor transplants in the U.S., caring for tens of thousands of patients each year.

Thinking about becoming a donor? Here are a few common misconceptions and facts about blood stem cell and bone marrow donation:

❌ Myth: Donation is very painful.
✅ Fact: Discomfort and side effects vary from person to person, but it may be less painful than you think.

❌ Myth: Donation is expensive.
✅ Fact: Donating is free. All of your medical and travel expenses are covered by NMDP, and they can also help cover any lost wages due to donation.

❌ Myth: Only males can donate blood stem cells or bone marrow.
✅ Fact: Anyone between age 18 and 40 who meets the medical requirements can donate, regardless of gender.

You could be a match for someone in need. Learn more and join the registry today here: https://bit.ly/46mr7fR.

12/09/2025

September is National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month, and to help enlighten colleagues on new treatment techniques and devices for this heart condition, HCA Florida Ocala Hospital hosted a workshop featuring two of its top cardiologists.

Awareness is key, as anyone can develop atrial fibrillation, or AFib, which is an irregular heartbeat in which the atria doesn’t contract in a strong, rhythmic way. A heart in AFib may not pump enough oxygen-rich blood, which could lead to problems such as a stroke, clot, or heart failure. A recent study by Journal of the American College of Cardiology estimates that more than 10 million Americans have AFib, the risk of which increases as people grow older.

During the workshop, Dr. Himanshu Shukla, a board-certified cardiac electhrophysiologist with HCA Florida Heart and Lung, discussed how AFib develops, who is at risk, and the advantages and disadvantages of various treatment options including pacemakers, traditional ablation, and pulsed-field ablation. Pulsed-field ablation is a new technology that involves targeting the source of the arrhythmia with short high-voltage pulses and thus reduces the risk of injury to surrounding healthy heart tissue.

Dr. Chris Jones, a local cardiologist, presented on the benefits and patient preparation for completing an AFib procedure and using a device to occlude, or block, the left atrial appendage simultaneously. This procedure is convenient for the patient, effectively treats AFib, and allows for patients to live with less reliance on blood-thinners and other anti-arrhythmia medications.

Also in attendance at the event were several vendors who offered demonstrations of their treatment devices, including pacemakers, defibrillators, catheters, and a virtual reality system that demonstrated how a surgeon inserts a catheter into the heart.

❤️ – or atrial fibrillation – is a disruption in the heart’s electrical system, leading to an irregular heartbeat. The American Heart Association estimates that over 5 million Americans are living with AFib. Symptoms vary from one person to another, and some people may not have any symptoms at all. Those with AFib have a higher risk of stroke, heart failure and other health concerns. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options, which can help reduce the risk.

If you’re living with AFib and you’re looking for support and resources, visit the American Heart Association’s My AFib Experience® website: https://bit.ly/3V8t7mS

In collaboration with the American Heart Association, our larger HCA Healthcare network promotes better heart health through national education efforts and community integration to teach about healthy heart activities, CPR emergency response and knowing the symptoms of heart issues.

Colleagues at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital have selected Dr. Bryan Bush as their latest recipient of the hospitals' Physician of the Quarter award.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital CEO Alan Keesee presented Dr. Bush, a cardiothoracic surgeon, with the award on Sept. 9. Keesee said he appreciated Dr. Bush's work to elevate HCA Florida Ocala Hospital's recognition by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), a national group that tracks quality outcomes and patient safety among cardiothoracic surgeons.

Earlier this year, the STS once again awarded HCA Florida Ocala Hospital its distinguished three-star rating, the highest possible, for its patient care and positive outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting procedures and recognized the hospital with a second three-star honor for multiprocedural heart surgeries.

Those who advocated for Dr. Bush's selection noted his surgical skills, pleasant bedside manner, and respect for patients and colleagues alike.

“Dr. Bush is always such a pleasure to work with. He is so kind and smart. He is the best!,” one supporter wrote. Another added, “Dr. Bush is the best CTS (cardiothoracic surgeon) on the planet!”

Neurosurgeons at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital are deploying a new weapon in the fight against deadly brain tumors —one that will give patients a significantly better opportunity for long-term survival.

Gleolan™ is a liquid medication that a patient takes about three hours before surgery. The dye casts a pink fluorescent glow around the patient’s brain tumor, sharply contrasting it from adjacent healthy brain cells. Surgeons then use a special fluorescent light to more readily identify the contours of malignant growth, allowing it to be removed more completely and with greater accuracy and safety.

“This new imaging dye increases our ability to remove as much of the tumor as possible because it shows cells that are hypercellular, which suggest tumor, that do not even light up on an MRI with contrast before surgery,” said Dr. Shawn Rai, a neurosurgeon with HCA Florida Ocala Neurosurgical Specialists. “The increased ability to remove more of the tumor for glioblastoma patients significantly increases life expectancy and overall survival in these patients with this aggressive brain cancer.”

The imaging dye is intended for patients afflicted by malignant gliomas, an aggressive form of cancer that takes root in the glial cells in the brain. According to the National Institutes of Health, 85,000 Americans are diagnosed with a primary brain tumor every year, and 29% of those cases are malignant. Gliomas are responsible for up to 85% of those malignant brain tumors diagnosed in adults.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital offer a comprehensive cancer care program for patients in Ocala and the surrounding area. Our services are recognized by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer as a comprehensive community cancer program, to include prevention, screening, education, treatment and recovery therapies. The Ocala Royal Dames on Friday hosted a presentation on the management of neurological (brain/spine) cancer that featured Dr. Jacob Freeman, a neurosurgeon with HCA Florida Ocala Neurosurgical Specialists, and Dr. Luis Carrascosa, a local radiation oncologist who is a member of the hospital's medical staff and chairman of the cancer committee at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital.

Dr. Freeman discussed various surgical techniques and treatments for brain tumors, including "awake" brain surgery, a procedure that involves keeping the patient conscious during surgery. Dr. Freeman explained that this method enables surgeons to obtain real-time feedback from patients as they work on removing the tumor. Surgeons have performed awake brain surgery at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital since 2017.

Dr. Carrascosa talked about the effects and advantages of radiation therapy on brain and spinal tumors relative to other treatments, such as chemotherapy.

The Ocala Royal Dames are a nonprofit group that raises money for research and educational programs to fight cancer.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital recently recognized two Ocala Fire Rescue firefighter-paramedics for their quick work in saving a patient suffering cardiac arrest.

On July 10, Firefighter-Paramedics Eduardo Ignacio-Simon and John Sweeney responded to a call in the 300 block of Southeast 17th Street. There, they found the patient, a 45-year-old woman, on the ground and others trying to help.

Sweeney and Ignacio-Simon immediately treated the patient with a defibrillator and a LUCAS device, which is a machine that provides continuous chest compressions like manual CPR. The patient was then taken to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and treated. She eventually made a full recovery.

On Sept. 2, Jordan Haegele, cardiovascular care coordinator for HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, presented Sweeney and Ignacio-Simon with the hospital's certificate of recognition and a challenge coin for their life-saving efforts.

According to the &LymphomaSociety, about every three minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma – the most common types of blood cancer. Blood cancer is caused by DNA mutations within blood cells. In most cases, this is linked to factors beyond our control, like age, ethnicity and family history. This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re answering common questions by sharing the facts shown here.

As a part of HCA Healthcare, we give our patients healthier tomorrows through access to a connected oncology network, including nine accredited blood cancer treatment programs. Through these programs, over 1,000 acute leukemia patients receive treatment each year. For some blood cancers, the only potential cure is a blood and marrow transplant. The HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network is the nation's leading provider of these transplants, conducting over 1,500 annually. Cellular therapy is another potential treatment for those with blood cancer, and our network is also leading the way in this novel treatment.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with blood cancer, we’re here to help. Find compassionate oncology care: https://bit.ly/3UWnOqE.

It's natural to worry about the health of your parents as they age. Afterall, aging increases their risk for several chronic diseases, including arthritis, cancer, dementia and Type 2 diabetes.

The best way to help them stay healthy is to encourage your parents to maintain their annual wellness visits, complete their physician recommended bloodwork and stay on top of their annual screenings. These screenings could include:

- Blood pressure test
- Cervical cancer screening
- Colonoscopy
- Lung cancer screening
- Skin cancer screening
- Mammogram
- Prostate exam
- Pulse oximetry test

School may be underway, but there’s still time for one last camping adventure. Keep your family safe with these smart camping tips for kids:

1. Buddy up. Even bathroom breaks need a partner.
2. Set boundaries. Mark clear campsite limits so kids know where it’s safe to explore.
3. Look, don’t eat. Teach kids not to snack on berries, mushrooms or other wild plants.
4. Steer clear of rash-causing plants. Learn to spot poison ivy, oak and sumac. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and wash hands often.
5. Shoes on, always. Protect little feet from thorns, rocks and other sharp objects.
6. Tools aren’t toys. Keep kids away from axes, knives and other dangerous gear.
https://bit.ly/3Jmyufu petting wildlife. Even friendly-looking animals can carry disease or bite.
8. Review fire safety. Go over rules before the marshmallows roast — supervised fun is safest.
