Justina (Gigi) is a faithful and loving wife, mother & sister who received a donated liver! Because of it, she now needs a liver transplant.

Gigi has primary biliary cholangitis, a chronic autoimmune disease in which the bile ducts in your liver are slowly destroyed.

Exciting news: Gigi had the liver transplant last week. The doctors are pleased with the surgery and Gigi is recovering as expected. The entire Grotto family is humbled by the outreach, thoughts, and prayers that our family and friends have shown us. Thank you all for your support.

Big smiles for big news — Gigi matched with a donor! We’re blown away by the selflessness of the donor. It’s hard to fully grasp their enthusiasm for the gift they’re offering.

Surgery is scheduled for late January. Thank you to everyone for the kindness and generosity you’ve extended to our family over the past couple of months (and year), and the support you’re offering as we figure out her many months of recovery post-op. It means so much.

There are a handful of top-level requirements for being a living living donor. A natural question, too, is, why can’t one of Gigi’s kids donate? Unfortunately, none of her children are suitable donors. That’s why we’ve had to turn outside our immediate family in hopes of finding a match.

Our family is tight. We’ve navigated some serious storms and this disease is no different. When the going gets tough, we band together with grit, determination, and, of course, humor.

Gigi - also known to many of us as mom, Justina, and Mrs. Grotto - has primary biliary cholangitis, a chronic autoimmune disease in which the bile ducts in your liver are slowly destroyed. While she has managed the disease for almost a decade, this past year things progressed. She now needs a liver transplant.
