We are a team medical students and doctors who are going to rural Madagascar to study and treat the disease Schistosomiasis in children in a remote area of Madagascar. 2019 expedition starts 8th June 2019. It sets out to research and treat the infectious disease Schistosomiasis in the Marolambo region of Madagascar. Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that infects children through contact with
contaminated water. Once in the body, it can stunt growth, cause liver disease and even lead to death. It is rife in Madagascar; we conducted an expedition last year that found that 94% of children in 6 villages in Marolambo had the disease. We will return this year to research the full burden of the disease, using questionnaires, ultrasound, tests for anaemia and malaria, and cardiovascular assessments. We will also be running education and treatment programs, alongside the Malagasy department of health. Our long term aims are to reduce the prevalence of Schistosomiasis infection, improving the health of the region and boosting socio-economic growth. We will be working with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, the World Health Organisation and the Department of Health, Madagascar, to reach these objectives.
