While the number of arrivals and asylum applications in the Mediterranean region have decreased over the past year, it still remains an area where national authorities face pressures. Several Mediterranean countries still face high challenges across all parts of their asylum systems.
The EUAA’s Executive Director, Nina Gregori, attended the MED 9 Conference of Ministers in Rovinj, Croatia 🇭🇷 over these two days. In her remarks, she informed ministers that while overall asylum applications in the 🇪🇺 have decreased, Mediterranean countries remain amongst the top recipients. The situation is further complicated by volatility due to current geopolitical dynamics around Europe.
She stressed that preparedness and flexibility are therefore paramount, and that the upcoming entry into effect of the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum are key in being ready for unexpected developments. The EUAA is assisting all Member States in getting ready, while at the same time assisting many of the MED 9 operationally with their asylum and reception systems, with personnel deployed in 🇨🇾 🇬🇷 🇮🇹 🇲🇹 🇪🇸 (5 of the 9).
The Executive Director also met separately with Davor Božinović, Minister of the Interior of Croatia. They discussed the state of play in the country and preparations that are underway for the entry in effect of the Pact in less than a month. She was pleased to learn about the ongoing efforts being made and the European approach underpinning this work, and reiterated the EUAA’s commitment to the Croatian authorities.
Finally, Ms Gregori introduced the Agency’s new Liaison Officer to Croatia, Giulia Foghin, who will act to further strengthen our collaboration and ongoing contacts. This development will serve to ensure that the EUAA is always there for the Croatian authorities whenever needed.
