Research 2024: FLAME

Research 2024: FLAME FLAME aims to study the microbiota and inflammation state in the large intestines (colon).

The ultimate outcome is to develop a test to avoid unnecessary colonoscopies and understand early evolution of disease.

What an inspiring day at the 6th European Lifestyle Medicine Congress (ELMO) in Brussels, held in partnership with Practice Lifestyle Medicine (BELMO). It was wonderful to reconnect with colleagues, meet fellow authors, and exchange ideas with leaders shaping the future of lifestyle and preventive medicine.

A highlight for me was presenting new findings from the FLAME Project, where we investigate how lifestyle-driven changes in gut ecology influence metabolic resilience. My talk, โ€œGut Dysbiosis as a Determinant of One-Carbon Metabolism Deficiency,โ€ shared emerging evidence on how disruptions in the microbiota can impair key metabolic pathways. The thoughtful discussion that followed underscored how essential this research is for developing targeted, lifestyle-based interventions.

Iโ€™m left Brussels energized by the collaborative spirit and excited for the next steps in the FLAME Project as we continue to translate science into meaningful health impact.

The FLAME project results sparked the start of the Prevent CRC project. Follow this new project.

What an experience of belonging! ๐Ÿ™Œ

I had the privilege of spending 2 incredible days connecting and collaborating with the Lifestyle Medicine family. The discussions were inspiring, as we explored opportunities, strengths, and challenges in our collective mission to prevent chronic disease and promote healthy habits. ๐ŸŒฑ

At the Practice Lifestyle Medicine conference, I presented the latest findings from the FLAME project.

Interesting results using colonoscopy lavages. We were surprised how comparable are the normalised data for the main commensal colonisers of the colon (Blue and purple). Of interest, the first case (300601) shows colonisation of pathogenic bacteria (orange), whilst in the second case, the high abundance is in the f***l sample prior colonoscopy prep and are absent in the coloscopy lavages.

Research helps us to understand the microbial colonisation of the colon. Keep tuned.

Update August 2024

The first batch of patient samples are being processed this week. Thanks to the project intermediaries that set out the best procedure to recruit and consent patients to the study, to the team of clinicians who provides us with the samples, and to the patients that altruistically consent the use of the material.

We keep you posted. Thanks for following us.
