✨ 𝟐 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐒𝐏𝐑𝐌

Two years ago, we relaunched the Maltese Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (MSPRM) with a vision — to strengthen awareness, advocacy, and collaboration in a medical field that is rapidly growing both locally and globally.

Rehabilitation has never been more important. Through the landmark WHO “Rehabilitation 2030” initiative, the world has recognised rehabilitation as an essential health pillar globally, crucial for reducing the disability burden which is growing exponentially worldwide — and we are proud to be contributing to this movement here in Malta.

Over these last two years, our journey has been driven entirely by passion, teamwork, and a shared belief in empowering people through rehabilitation.

💙 We expanded our network and built bridges with numerous medical specialties, NGOs, organisations, and community entities.

💙 We worked tirelessly to improve awareness about Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) and the vital role rehabilitation plays in empowering persons with disability and supporting recovery.

💙 We organised outreach campaigns, social media initiatives, radio programmes, and educational activities aimed at bringing rehabilitation closer to the public.

💙 We proudly launched and published 𝐏𝐇𝐘𝐒𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 — our magazine featuring real rehabilitation journeys, inspiring patient stories, medical insights, and innovative rehabilitation technologies.

Most recently, we have been working intensively on organising Malta’s very first Shoulder Rehabilitation Masterclass 'SPALLA' — a landmark academic event bringing together local and international experts for a world-class symposium and ultrasound workshop dedicated to advancing rehabilitation excellence in Malta.

Today, as we celebrate 2 years since the relaunch of MSPRM, we are humbled and excited to announce another important milestone:

✨ 𝐌𝐒𝐏𝐑𝐌 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐄𝐄 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞. ✨

As our vision continues to grow, so does our need for passionate people who believe in this mission.

📢 We are therefore opening a special 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 x𝟑 (𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞) 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐒𝐏𝐑𝐌 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 ahead of our upcoming Annual General Meeting later this year.

We are looking for motivated healthcare professionals, volunteers, creatives, advocates, or anyone passionate about disability empowerment and rehabilitation to work with us on meaningful projects that aim to:

🔹 Improve rehabilitation awareness
🔹 Share inspiring recovery stories
🔹 Support individuals with disabilities
🔹 Advocate for infrastructural and service improvements
🔹 Strengthen rehabilitation services across Malta

If you believe in creating meaningful change — locally and internationally — and would like to be part of this growing movement, we would love to hear from you.

📩 Contact us at: [info.msprm@gmail.com]
Or approach any of our members for more information.

Together, we can continue building stronger rehabilitation services, stronger communities, and stronger futures. 💙

⭐ Introducing SPALLA 2026 — Malta’s first Shoulder Rehabilitation Masterclass.

A multidisciplinary educational experience bringing together experts in Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM), radiology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, orthopaedics, and other rehabilitation sectors around one of the commonest causes of pain, disability, and functional limitation worldwide.

🧠 At its core, SPALLA brings a Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine perspective to shoulder pathology — moving beyond isolated diagnoses to explore function, recovery, participation, and quality of life.

Shoulder pain is recognised as the third most common musculoskeletal complaint in primary care. Whether due to arthritis, trauma, sports injuries, hemiplegia, spasticity, or chronic pain, shoulder pain and limitation represent a major challenge for a wide range of clinicians.

💡 In the PRM framework, the shoulder becomes more than just a joint. It becomes a clinical model for understanding:
• function
• independence
• movement
• participation
• quality of life

🎯 SPALLA aims to equip clinicians and trainees with practical clinical skills and multidisciplinary perspectives to better support patients living with disability and functional limitations.

👥 SPALLA offers a unique opportunity to learn from experts across multiple disciplines while exploring shoulder pathology through a functional, patient-centred lens.

For medical students, trainees, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, PRM trainees, foundation doctors, orthopaedic trainees and specialists, and all professionals involved in rehabilitation, SPALLA is an opportunity to deepen clinical understanding while broadening perspectives on disability, recovery, and function. An opportunity to present scientific posters is also available - not to be missed!

📍 SPALLA 2026
📅 23–24 October 2026
🏥 Mater Dei Hospital, Malta

Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) is not simply about treating pathology: it is about restoring participation, function, and quality of life❤️

March Brain Injury Awareness Month 🧠💚

The JFK Coma Recovery Scale–Revised (CRS-R) is a standardized clinical tool used to assess levels of consciousness in individuals with severe brain injury. It helps clinicians distinguish between conditions such as coma, vegetative state, and minimally conscious state, while also tracking recovery over time.

The scale evaluates six key areas: auditory, visual, motor, oromotor/verbal function, communication, and arousal. By observing how a patient responds to stimuli and commands, healthcare professionals can better understand their level of awareness and guide rehabilitation planning.
