“Il-Milied It-tajjeb! Specjalment lil dawk li m'ghandhomx ma min jiccelebraw.

Flimkien ma' Richmond Foundation - Malta, provajna nsibu modi differenti biex nirraprezentaw problemi fis-sahha mentali u aktar minn hekk, biex nirraprezentaw kif u ghaliex nistghu nsibuha daqshekk difficli biex nifthu qalbna ma haddiehor.
Ghall min jbaghti bis-sahha mentali, l-milied jista jkun zmien difficli. Ghalhekk nixtiequ niehdu mument biex nharsu lura u napprezzaw progett li huwa ghal qalbna u li jindirizza din il-problema.”

ANKRA Malta

------

Merry Christmas! Especially to those who haven't got anyone to celebrate with.
With Richmond Foundation - Malta we tried to find different methods and symbols to represent health problems like 'depression', and more than that, to represent why and how we find it so difficult to open our hearts on the subject and with others. For those that struggle with their mental health, Christmas can be a tough time to keep up with the rest of society. For that reason we wanted to take a moment to look back and appreciate a project that will always be close to our hearts.

Support from family and friends can be vital when trying to change drug or alcohol habits. Try your best to take yourself out of situations where you know friends or family might tempt you to take drugs or drink excessively. Hang around people who will support and respect your choice to cut down on drink and drugs.

Young people sometimes find signalling easier than vocalising how they are feeling when they spot their early warning signs of distress. Ask them how they would want you as to react if they give this signal. If they know you will not overreact, they are more likely to access their help.

They could try squeezing your hand, asking you to carry out a specific form of distraction with them, or texting you a code word.

It is possible to learn to manage really intense feelings in ways that do not cause harm. It can be hard, but just take it one step at a time.

Distraction methods include taking some deep breaths, having a shower. holding ice cubes in your hand, snapping a rubber band on your wrist, exercising, eating a chilli, or talking to someone. Often the urge to self-harm will lessen after a period of time.

As a parent or guardian, it's always important to remind yourself that this isn’t your experience. Even if your child’s thoughts and feelings seem silly or irrational to you, do not downplay them. Acknowledge what your child is describing, to ensure that they feel comfortable opening up to you.

You can help your child with their anxiety by assessing the ‘awfulness’ of the situation that is causing it. This means dealing with realistic concerns such as bullying, gently challenging fears that have grown out of proportion, and checking if your child is over estimating the likelihood of the bad things happening.

Supporting your child who is using drugs and alcohol can be really hard, however there are some practical ways with which to help them.

Encourage them to invest in activities that improve their mood naturally – drug and alcohol free, such as exercise, a sport they used to enjoy playing, music, learning something new, volunteering or spending time in nature.

It can take time to change drug and alcohol habits, but there are some simple and practical strategies you could try out which might help lessen your dependency on them, such as avoiding having drugs or alcohol in the house.

This might also mean approaching your parents and asking them for their support by removing their own alcohol and/or drugs from the house.

Don’t ignore what might be a real mental health issue. If your child is self-harming, let them know you are there for them. You might find it hard to understand but you can support them. Be realistic; self-harming can take a while to stop. Encourage them when you notice that they have coped with difficult things without self-harming and help them to achieve the goals they set for themselves.

If you struggle with self-harm and want things to change, a good place to start is to recognise when you do and don’t self-harm. Identify the usual times, places and feelings that trigger your self-harm, and consider keeping a journal to track your habits.

Giving up self-harm and trying new ways to cope takes time and patience but you will begin to see that you don’t have to hurt yourself to feel better; there are other ways.

It's easy to fall into the trap of overwhelming your child with questions. Try to avoid lecturing them or giving them an ultimatum. The important thing is to get your child talking about what they’re going through, and letting them know you are there to listen.

Talking about depression can be hard for anyone, so if your child shuts you out at first, respect that they might not be ready to talk.

Are you worried about your child and not sure what to say? Do you worry that you might make things worse? You want to help them, but not sure how? It all starts with a conversation.

Even if you aren’t sure quite what to say, the important thing is that you say something. By starting a conversation and showing your concern and willingness to support them, you’re giving them an opportunity to share what they are going through. This can make all the difference in ensuring they get any support they might need.
