"Angelina Martinez Miranda is a traditional midwife living and practicing in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. She is the inheritor of three generations of midwifery. Her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were all traditional midwives.
I had the privilege to sit down with Angelina in Eugene, Oregon at the Midwifery Today Conference.
During her general session presentation, Angelina delighted the audience when describing her very first experience attending a birth alone. According to Angelina, in her community as soon as a girl menstruates she is considered a woman and ready for marriage.
When Angelina was 14, she was considered a woman and was proud to be. She had seen many babies born by accompanying her mother and grandmother to births but had never attended a birth by herself. One morning she was alone at home cleaning, which is what a woman would do, and a man knocked on the door.
He asked for her mother or grandmother and when Angelina said they were both out on a birth and that she was home by herself, his response was, “Well, you are going to have to come with me then, because my wife is about to give birth.” With no hesitation Angelina grabbed a few towels and strings her mother and grandmother kept in a jar of alcohol to cut the cord and went with the man.
When she arrived at their home, it was clear the woman was in advanced labor and would soon give birth. Angelina calmed the mother and caught the baby. After the baby was born she noticed very little bleeding. As she was expecting the placenta to come, the mother started to make very strong bearing down efforts and a surprise second baby came out— !
Angelina was amazed at how easy it was for the baby to be born, noticing that the breech was a bit easier to come out than the head first baby. That was Angelina’s first catch—or catches!
Angelina still has the looks and the glow of a young girl with rosy cheeks and a contagious, proud smile. She has been a midwife for 40 years now and attends between 20 and 42 births each month! You can do the math of how many babies she has received in her loving hands." -Ana P. Markel
