Many asylum seekers arrive alone, and don’t know where their family members are and if they are safe. This is particularly hard for unaccompanied children. While being safe is essential, for many, the hope of reconnecting with family is just as important.

ℹ️ Family tracing is a process to identify, locate, and reconnect separated family members. It’s a fundamental part of international protection and an essential safeguard to ensure that asylum procedures respect the right of family unity.

📢 The EUAA has published a Practical Guide on Family Tracing:

🟦 Part 1: https://europa.eu/!bKhCKd
🟦 Part 2: https://europa.eu/!q9NvrJ

These publications guide authorities and practitioners across the EU+ working with international protection applicants, especially vulnerable children.

Al-Shabaab’s intensifying attacks around Mogadishu, coupled with inter-clan conflict and political fragmentation, continue to destabilise Somalia. Civilians face serious protection risks, including forced recruitment, gender-based violence, corporal punishment, and repression of journalists and LGBTIQ+ persons, all amid worsening socio-economic conditions.

Between April 2023 and March 2025, Somali nationals lodged nearly 38 000 asylum applications in EU+ countries. The recognition rate stood at 59%, with 16 000 cases pending at first instance.

📘 The EUAA has published two COI reports on Somalia’s security situation and socio-economic conditions, offering valuable insights to inform asylum decisions.
