We recently had the opportunity to conduct a mental health session at Jumeirah Olhahali Island Maldives, focusing on Burnout & Mental Wellbeing.

In this session, we explored the growing impact of burnout and everyday stress, especially in high-performance resort environments. Participants were guided to recognize early warning signs of mental fatigue, understand common triggers, and reflect on how burnout can affect both personal wellbeing and professional performance.

The session also emphasized practical coping strategies ranging from simple daily habits to structured approaches for managing stress and highlighted the importance of seeking timely support. Creating awareness and normalizing conversations around mental health remains a key step toward building healthier, more resilient teams.

A huge thank you to the leadership at Jumeirah Olhahali Island for prioritising their people and creating space for these conversations.

1 in 4 people will experience depression or anxiety in their lifetime.

That's your colleague sitting next to you. Your friend you haven't heard from in a while. Maybe even you.

Yet we still whisper about it or worse, say nothing at all.

Depression and anxiety aren't signs of weakness. They are medical conditions, just like diabetes or heart disease. They affect how we think, feel, and function every single day. And for many people, they go undiagnosed and untreated simply because the stigma feels heavier than the illness itself.

Here's what we want you to know today:

✅ Seeking help is an act of courage, not failure.
✅ Talking about it can save a life sometimes your own.
✅ Recovery is possible. People get better every day.

If you're struggling, please reach out to a mental health professional, a trusted person in your life, or a crisis helpline. You don't have to carry this alone.

And if someone in your life is struggling check on them. A simple "How are you, really?" can open a door that changes everything.

Let's normalize the conversation. 💜

small nation with a big health story!

The Maldives has one of the highest carrier rates of Beta Thalassemia in the world.

Why?

For generations, island communities lived in relative isolation. While this shaped a rich and close-knit culture, it also increased the likelihood of inheriting certain genetic conditions like thalassemia.

What makes this truly remarkable is not just the challenge but the response.

The Maldives has taken proactive, nationwide steps through screening programs, public awareness, and early interventions turning a national health burden into a model for prevention.

Today, it stands as a powerful example of how targeted public health strategies can create real impact, even in the most geographically unique settings.

Many people think Diclofenac is a simple painkiller, but frequent or long-term use can silently damage the kidneys and increase the risk of heart problems.

It belongs to a group of medicines called Nonsteroidal Anti‑inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). While it is effective for reducing pain and inflammation, taking it regularly without medical supervision can:

+ Increase the risk of Heart Attack
+ Worsen High Blood Pressure
+ Cause stomach ulcers or bleeding
+ Lead to Kidney Damage

Why this matters in the Maldives?

Because many people work long hours in tourism, construction, or physically demanding jobs, painkillers like Diclofenac are often taken frequently without realizing the long-term risks.

Heart health is becoming an increasingly important topic in the Maldives’ resort environment.

Over the past few years, many resort clinics have noticed a gradual rise in cardiac-related cases among team members. Working in remote island environments means that when a medical emergency happens, immediate access to tertiary hospitals such as Treetop Hospital or ADK Hospital may require evacuation by boat or flight. This makes early detection and prevention extremely important.
One of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent serious heart-related complications is through routine health screening.

Basic tests every 6 months can make a significant difference, including:
• Lipid Profile – to detect high cholesterol levels early
• Liver Function Tests – which can indicate metabolic and lifestyle-related risks
• Blood Sugar Tests – to identify early diabetes risk
• Blood Pressure monitoring

These simple screenings can help identify silent risk factors such as high cholesterol, fatty liver, or metabolic syndrome, which often show no symptoms until complications occur.

In the resort environment where team members live and work on the same island, maintaining good health is essential not only for individual wellbeing but also for operational safety and productivity.

By promoting regular preventive health checks, resorts can take a proactive step in protecting their team members and reducing the risk of serious cardiac events.

Prevention is always better than emergency evacuation.
