Recently, our organization conducted pressure sores prevention training in Phalombe.

In attendance were Palliative Care Professionals from Phalombe District Hospital, Community Workers from the Malawi Council for Disability Affairs, Special Needs Education Teachers from the Ministry of Education, and Parents and Persons with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Child Help SBH adopts a holistic approach, striving to impact all aspects of our clients' lives. Our training programs are multidisciplinary, incorporating various professions essential to the care and upbringing of persons with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Participants gained knowledge and skills on preventing and managing pressure sores, a primary cause of mortality among persons with spina bifida in developing countries like Malawi.

We are delighted to note a decrease in pressure sore incidence among persons with spina bifida in Malawi following the implementation of this project.

James and John were born twins some eight years ago.

James was born with no problem while John was born with spina bifida.

James as young as he is, he pushes John everyday to school or around the community.

At Child Help there is something that we learn from the young James: A human being is never heavy to push.

If you can donate something, anything, there is no little donation, you will help James to Push John.

Yesterday was a milestone.

We signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH) a major referral hospital in the southern eastern region of Malawi.

This MoU runs for four years. It is the second one following the expiry of the first one in 2025.

ZCH treats a majority of persons with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in the southern region after Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
Therefore this MoU will ensure coordinated efforts by Child Help and ZCH to improve the quality of life for persons with spina bifida and hydrocephalus from the eastern region.

In the picture, the Executive Director for Child Help and the Principal Nursing Officer (in blue uniform) for ZCH shows the MoU after the signing ceremony.

We join the families, academia and health care professionals in mourning a devout paediatrian professor Robin Broadhead who has passed away at the age of 83.

We have not had that opportunity to work with Prof. But he laid a solid foundation in the Paediatrics department of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital that makes our work in the department easier today.

Prof Broadhead is a syllabus name in the context that our work evolves. So we can't go by without acknowledging his work to our work.

Rest well Professor Robin Broadhead.

A mother to a child with spina bifida travelled more than 100 km to our clinic to collect continence supplies and folic acid.

We gave her the supplies and folic acid. But we don't let them go back without measuring the head.

We measure the child's head development with a tape measure and plot it on the graph held by the mother.

That way we can know timely if the child is developing hydrocephalus or the surgery done is not working.

That is how we use a tape measure for timely neurosurgical intervention.
