This year on 25 October, we will be celebrating the International Day for Spinabifida and Hydrocephalus (WSBHD).

As we are preparing for this year's celebration, we visited our archives and looked back at how we celebrated the day in 2020.

PEOPLE ARE ASKING: WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE?

We are assisting a young girl with incontinence of stools.

So what is incontinence?

Incontinence is the involuntary leakage or loss of control of urine from the bladder or stool from the bowel. This means a person who has incontinence does not know that it is time to pass urine or stools.

What causes incontinence?

Incontinence is caused by many factors. Mainly conditions like spina bifida or other spinal injury that affect the spinal cord and consequently affect communication between the brain and organs that keep urine or stools.

Incontinence can also be caused by inborn deformities that affect organs that are responsible for urine and stool passage.

So what is the cure for incontinence?

In many cases there in no cure. Even surgery, in many cases, does not cure incontinence.

So what is life like for persons with incontinence?

Persons with incontinence are wet which makes them not able to interact with their friends, not able to go to school or work, and are also at risk of pressure sores and kidney damage which threatens their life.

That is why at child help, we thought of doing something about incontinence.

For urine incontinence, we use small catheters to train people to drain urine five (5) times per day. And for stool incontinence, we train them to remove stools once a day using a plastic chair, a bucket, a blue bag and tubings as you can see from the picture.

That way, people that we train become dry, their kidneys are safeguarded and they can go to school, work and interact with their friends without any fear of stigma.

Everyday we find something to motivate us on what we do.

Today we dug this invitation letter from 2020 from the Norwegian Embassy to our Executive Director in recognition of his work towards persons with spinabifida and hydrocephalus in Malawi.

This has energized our team today.

What is your motivation today for what you do?

It pains us when we wake up to the news that we have lost a child that we touched.

However, we get relief to note that even in grief, a parent has the courage to inform us of their loss.

When the community gets excited LIKE THIS because of what we do; we get energized to continue doing what we do.

We at Child Help joins the rest of the world to celebrate the International Youth Day under the theme "Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond".

This theme emphasizes the significant role young people play in community-level actions towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and beyond.

In the picture: to the right is one of our youth with spinabifida who once worked at Mercy James Centre as a clerk and to the left is our youth with spina bifida currently studying a diploma in pharmacy.

We are delighted to be part of the opening ceremony of the new surgical center for Beit CURE International Hospital, Malawi where Her excellency the first lady of the nation is in attendance.

When a child with spinabifida walks onto our premises, we sort out the urine and stools problem. And then we send them to Beit CURE to sort out the legs and the feet. That way our patients are healed holistically.

That is why today we are celebrating this new establishment because it is testament that more and more of the patients that we see, will be served and restored holistically.

Congratulations 🎉 Beit CURE
