We joined Beit Cure Children's Hospital to train Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs) and Physiotherapists at Mangochi DHO on screening and identification of disabilities like Cleft lip, Talipes, hydrocephalus and Spina bifida.

The past two weeks Beit Cure engaged in the community storming in Mangochi, alerting the community to bring children suspected of these conditions to the 12 Health facility for screening and identification.

We are hopeful that through this activity, Child Help will identify persons with spina bifida and Hydrocephalus who were not able to reach services providers or were lost to follow up.

Mkulu wa bungwe la Child Help, a Blessings Chapweteka, apempha mbali zosiyanasiyana kuti zigwirizane posamalira omwe ali ndi ulumali wa chotupa pa msana komanso ali ndi zilonda zobwera chifukwa chakupanikizika kwa khungu (pressure sores).

Poyankhula pa maphunziro apadera okhudza kuzindikira, kupewa ndi kuchiza zilondazi, a Chapweteka anati kafukufuku wa zaka ziwiri zapitazo waonetsa kuti 30 mwa anthu 100 omwe ali ndi ulumaliwu amamwalira kaamba kosowa chisamaliro chokwanira ku zilonda zomwe ena amakhala nazo zomwe zimadza kaamba kosowa chisamaliro chokwanira akanyowa ndi mkodzo komanso chimbudzi.

Bungweli akuti lapezanso kuti zilondazi zimayamba ana akamafika zaka ziwiri mpaka zitatu, omwenso ambiri amakhala ayamba sukulu choncho ndikofunika kuti nawo aphunzitsi adziwe momwe angathandizire anawa akapita kusukulu.

Pamsonkhanowo panali ogwira ntchito zaumoyo, aphunzitsi, madokotala odziwa matenda a mafupa komanso makolo a ana omwe ali ndi ulumali wa chotupa pamsana (Spinabifida).

Zilonda zobwela chifukwa chakupanikizika kwa khungu (pressure sores) ndizovuta kwambiri kuno ku Malawi kwa anthu omwe ali ndi matenda a spina bifida. Pazaka ziwiri zapitazi, odwala oposa 30 pa handede aliwonse omwe tidawawona anali ndi zilonda zopanikizika zikuluzikulu. Ndipo ambiri mwa iwo anafa ndi zilonda zi.

Zomwe tapeza zikuwonetsa kuti zilonda zi zimayamba ana akayamba kusewera kuyambira zaka ziwiri mpaka zitatu komanso akayamba sukulu. Izi zikutanthauza kuti zilonda zopanikizika sizimakhudza ogwira ntchito zachipatala okha komanso aphunzitsi.

Pressure sores are a big challenge in Malawi for persons with spina bifida. Over the last two years, more than 30% of the patients that we saw had serious pressure sores. And a significant number of them died from these pressure sores.

Our findings show that the sores start developing when the children start playing around from 2 years to 3 years and when they start attending school. This means that pressure sores do not only affect Health Care Workers but teachers too.

It is from that background, that we at Child Help will start training Health Care Workers, Specialist Teachers, Physiotherapists, Orthopaedic Technicians and Parents to Children with Spinabifida on Prevention Identification, Referral and Treatment of pressure sores from tomorrow.
