We conduct internationally excellent science to benefit human health with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. MLW is built around excellent laboratories, strategically located in the largest hospital in Malawi, closely linked with the community and an integral part of the medical school. These relationships provide a unique opportunity replicated in few centres in Africa to study major health issues sp

anning both community and hospital. Malawi provides a unique supportive environment for our MOP, with government commitment to universal health coverage, strong engagement with research and willingness to innovate around evidence-based public health programmes. MLW surveillance and diagnostic platforms provide clinicians with early indicators of changes in the incidence of common and emerging diseases. Our combination of epidemiologic, clinical and laboratory science allows us, together with internationally leading collaborators, to determine the underlying mechanisms of important diseases. We study individual and community behaviour and bring this together with basic biology in order to plan appropriate interventions that improve health. Our translational pipeline, while providing an excellent academic environment, results in significant clinical trials and we transfer the findings to policy leading to improved health in Malawi and world-wide. We have two major well- established Programmes with clearly de-fined aims for the next 10 years, built on excellent achievements to date. These Programmes are:

- Preventing death from severe infection
- Transmission reduction in infectious diseases

The Programmes have specific objectives and key deliverables for 2018 to 2022. In addition, we have a Strategic Initiative to target selected high burden chronic diseases (lung impairment, stroke, blindness), particularly related to HIV. In partnership with the College of Medicine we have Training Aims to attract, train and retain local and international senior scientists. Through our partnership with the Ministry of Health, our Policy Aims ensure that our research is both relevant and applied to improve human health.

A Proud Moment for Malawi & MLW! 🇲🇼

The guest of honor during the meeting, Dr. Joshua Matthias applauded the consortium and partners for the impact of the research.

"Not all research speaks directly to Malawi’s needs — but this one did. The Typhoid Vaccine trial was a game-changer, tailored specifically for Malawi, with the Ministry of Health, MLW, and partners working hand in hand," he said.

Typhoid results in more than 7 million cases and more tha 93,000 deaths globally each year, mostly among children and young adults in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. This is an important milestone because typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) can save lives.

Dr. Matthias continued to say: "This kind of collaboration ensures that research doesn’t just sit in journals but translates into real policies and life-saving public health interventions. From the rotavirus and pneumococcal vaccines to the malaria and now typhoid vaccines — we’re seeing real impact."

The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) is today hosting a four-person delegation from the Sub-Saharan African Network for TB/HIV Research Excellence (SANTHE).

The visit aims to explore how SANTHE's research opportunities can be extended to Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and Middle Career Researchers (MCRs) in Malawi.

Professor Henry Mwandumba, Director of MLW, initiated the event with a comprehensive overview of MLW's research work.

The agenda for the visit includes presentations from various themes at MLW and a guided tour of MLW's research facilities. These facilities encompass the Ward 3A Clinic, the Oxygen Plant, the High Dependency Unit, and the Endoscopy Unit at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

We wrapped up Day 2 in style as emerging innovators took the spotlight to pitch groundbreaking solutions aimed at transforming the health sector.

Six impressive projects were showcased, each evaluated through a live pitching session. After rigorous questioning and judging, three standout innovations were awarded for their potential to make a lasting impact on public health:

Chikondi Milanzi took first place with his project "Ana Ofunda", a tech-enhanced kangaroo mother care cloth. This innovative wrap is designed with features for monitoring body temperature and early signs of neonatal illness—blending traditional care with modern health tech.

Jimmy Banda secured second place with "Re-Limb", an inspiring project that transforms plastic waste into prosthetic limbs—combining environmental sustainability with life-changing impact.

Florence Nyirenda came in third with her Fetal Monitoring System, an initiative focused on improving maternal and child health through accessible monitoring technology.

The top three winners received cash prizes of USD 500, 300, and 200 respectively.

Day 2 of Innovation Week featured exciting progress updates from last year’s pitch competition winners:

🔹 Ceaser Chembezi, creator of the Sleep-Well Mosquito Repellent Body Lotion, shared his journey and key developments since winning.

🔹 A team of biomedical engineers led by Emmanuel Mtegha gave insight into their milestones and the challenges they’ve faced along their innovation journey.

Adding youthful energy to the day, students from Dzenje Community Day Secondary School, part of our Science for All initiative, showcased an ingenious project: a gym-powered energy system. Their setup uses physical exercise to charge a car battery, which is then connected to an inverter to generate usable electricity — a smart blend of fitness and renewable energy!

Innovation Week kicked off on a high note with an inspiring presentation from leading figures in the health and technology sectors.

Dr. Wisely Phiri, founder of Sparc Systems, addressed the gathering and encouraged aspiring innovators to uphold integrity, emphasizing that a strong reputation is key to unlocking both business and career opportunities.

Meanwhile, the President of the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) urged young innovators to develop solutions that are locally relevant. He noted that many donor-funded projects often cater to Eurocentric needs, overlooking the unique challenges faced within our communities.

The Journalist in Residence fellowship has kickstarted this week in Mangochi. This new cohort is under the Health Research Reporting scheme, which aims to train media personnel to understand, translate and report on health research.

The sessions have brought together over 18 journalists, editors, media consultants and MLW staff to explore how the JIR initiative can be effectively leveraged for impactful health reporting.

Setting the tone, Rodrick Sambakunsi, MLW’s Public Engagement expert, emphasized that the JIR programme was created to bridge critical gaps in health research reporting — including limited trust between journalists and researchers, restricted access to scientific information and challenges in interpreting complex health research data.

Kicking off his presentation, Brian Ngwira, Lead for the Clinical Research Support Unit (CRSU), highlighted that health challenges are shaped by a range of interlinked factors — from physical and geographical to socio-economic conditions.

He further broke down how different research approaches — including descriptive, analytical, experimental, qualitative and implementation research — are applied within health research.
