As Malawi strives to sustain recent gains in the fight against HIV, the 2024 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) shows that risky sexual behaviour remains more common among men than women.

According to the survey, 16 percent of men aged 15 to 49 reported having two or more sexual partners in the past 12 months compared to just 2 percent of women in the same age group.

This means men are eight times more likely than women to have multiple sexual partners.

The findings also show low condom use among both men and women; a factor which increases the risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV, despite ongoing prevention efforts.

National AIDS Commission (NAC) Chief Executive Officer, Dr Beatrice Matanje, said the results highlight the need to strengthen targeted HIV prevention strategies, particularly those focusing on men, along with renewed promotion of consistent condom use and PrEP.

The DHS 2024, released this week, was conducted using a nationally representative sample of about 23,000 households drawn from all 28 districts and the country’s four major cities.
