The Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner is once again on the move! This coming Saturday, the team will be heading to Nkhotakota for another exciting swimming trip at the lake.

This will be our second lake trip in 2025, the first one took us to Salima last month, and now it’s time to explore Nkhotakota.

Through such trips, we not only have fun but also take the opportunity to learn, share experiences, and continue spreading our message on youth-friendly health services wherever we go.

During today’s group discussion, participants drew attention to the growing issue of s*xual abuse among young people in Kasungu. It was revealed that many youths continue to suffer in silence, either due to fear, shame, or lack of knowledge on where to seek help and report such cases.

The discussion highlighted the devastating effects of s*xual abuse, lowering young people’s confidence, interrupting their education, and leaving lasting emotional wounds. Participants stressed the importance of continuous awareness and the establishment of safe spaces and reporting systems to ensure that young people are protected and supported.

The session was led by our focal point person, Alikanjero Kanyemba, who reaffirmed his commitment to empowering young people with knowledge, courage, and a strong voice to defend their rights and break the silence around abuse. He also took time to shed light on zero cholera prevention, encouraging participants to take an active role in promoting hygiene and safeguarding their health.

Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner, together with Kasungu YAM, successfully carried out an SRHRs awareness campaign in the area of SGVH Gundani within Kasungu Municipality.

The campaign was designed to respond to the challenges affecting young people who have limited access to SRHR information and services, to help reduce the increasing cases of STIs, and to encourage greater uptake of SRHR services.

The event drew a huge turnout of enthusiastic young people who accessed various services and gained essential information.

Let’s ensure no young person is left behind!

Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner recently took part in a vibrant Youth Network meeting that gathered energetic young people from different clubs across Kasungu Municipality. The meeting became a hub of innovation, as the youth exchanged diverse ideas focused on creating positive change and improving the wellbeing of their peers in the district.

The discussions offered a safe and interactive platform where young people openly shared experiences, inspired one another, and explored practical ways to strengthen their impact within their communities while addressing the challenges that youth continue to face.

Speaking during the session, Lameck Dimiton Gift, Chairperson for both the Kasungu Municipality Youth Network and the Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner, emphasized the need for youth to embrace income-generating activities as a way of sustaining their initiatives and staying productive. He also highlighted the value of teamwork, inclusivity, and strong partnerships with other stakeholders to build a united front for youth development.

In his closing remarks, he urged those guiding and supporting young people to take an active role in shaping their lives, ensuring that every young person is empowered, protected, and given the opportunity to thrive.

During today’s group discussions and debate, it became clear that young people are gaining valuable knowledge from SRHR information shared among them.

The conversations also highlighted the importance of making positive life choices and avoiding actions that could endanger their wellbeing.

As a result, many participants developed a deeper appreciation for SRHR services, leading to greater interest and participation in today’s YFHS activities.

Health is a fundamental human right. If we devote greater attention to adolescents and young people, we can address and overcome the serious health risks they face today.

For example, challenges such as limited knowledge and information on reproductive health, early and unprotected s*x, and other general health issues continue to put their well-being at risk.

At Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner, we have created a conducive environment where young people gather in large numbers to receive vital information and youth-friendly health services that can empower them to achieve their desired goals in life.

According to the National Youth Friendly Health Services Strategy, young people have the right to access accurate information and services on SRHR and family planning.

This was reflected today at Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner, where youth engaged in discussions on family planning and menstrual hygiene.

The session promoted knowledge sharing and built the capacity of young people with the right information, in line with the strategy’s goal of ensuring that every youth is informed, empowered, and not left behind.

The District Youth-Friendly Health Services Coordinator in Kasungu, Esnai Zimba, has advised young people to embrace love and tolerance as a means of strengthening YFHS work in the district.

Zimba made these remarks during a meeting organized by the Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner Executive, aimed at reviewing the performance of the youth group, addressing existing challenges, and mapping the way forward to achieve its goals.

She further emphasized that young people should avoid behaviors that may bring about division or conflict, exercise caution in their communication to prevent discouragement and hostility, and remain mindful of the dos and don’ts expected of every member or leader within the group.

Lameck Dimiton Gift, Chairperson of the Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner, described the message as timely, noting that it will help inspire positive change as they work to uplift millions of young people in the community and district. He highlighted love and unity as powerful tools for overcoming the rising challenges in health issues, describing them as catalysts and weapons of victory over the “hills and mountains” the youth continue to face.

Yesterday’s International Youth Day commemoration in Lilongwe highlighted a worrying reality of HIV, STIs, and early pregnancies remain on the rise, threatening the well-being and potential of young people who should be leading change in our society.

Despite Malawi 2063, the National Youth Policy, the National Youth-Friendly Health Services Strategy, and other government and institutional policies that position young people as central agents of development, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Many youths continue to suffer in silence; their challenges go unheard, and their participation in decision-making and policy formulation is still limited.

The gap between existing policies and lived realities is costing lives and opportunities. If we are to achieve sustainable development, this chain of neglect must be broken. Every young person deserves to be heard, supported, and included no one should be left behind.
