A team of passionate students from DAEYANG University has ignited a wave of transformation in SGVH Chiuno, Sub-T/A Ndume, through a powerful research initiative focused on community challenges.

During a feedback session at Chitete School, the students shared findings that exposed urgent issues such as lack of clean water, poor sanitation, early and teenage marriages, and limited access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services for young people.

The evidence moved leaders to act. District Environmental Health Officer Mr. Dickson Mbewe described the report as a “wake-up call,” urging united action across sectors. Chief SGVH Chiuno pledged to personally lead efforts to improve hygiene by encouraging and even constructing household latrines. Assistant Youth Officer Tione Banda reaffirmed the need for young people to lead development, as they are most affected by these challenges.

To sustain momentum, the students established the Msambafumu Youth Club, linking the community to health and WASH partners a true example of research translating into impact.

As Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner, we were proud to spice up the event with fun and engaging youth activities, and we also presented the newly formed youth club with recreational gifts including football, netball, and bawo because healthy minds and bodies go hand in hand with development.

Together, we are building stronger, healthier, youth-powered communities

Tomorrow is a Big Day at Chitete School!

Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner is proud to be part of the launch of a new Youth Club at Chiuno, taking place at Chitete School — a significant step toward empowering young people in our community.

This special event will bring together youth, community members, and leaders who are passionate about driving meaningful and lasting change.

The Youth Club initiative is designed to address key challenges that young people face, particularly in accessing accurate information and services related to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). We believe this platform will play a vital role in promoting learning, sharing, and positive youth development.

Together, let's work toward an inclusive and informed future for every young person.

Leave no young person behind.

Stepping Towards a Malaria-Free Generation and Empowered Youth in Kasungu!

Yesterday, Youth-Friendly Health Services (YFHS) Focal Person, Alikanjero Kanyemba, took a significant step in the fight against malaria by equipping young people with vital knowledge and practical skills. This effort supports the broader Zero Malaria by 2030 strategy. The session emphasized the correct use of treated mosquito nets, as well as the importance of regular testing and access to treatment and other preventative measures, as key strategies in malaria prevention.

In a powerful and motivating session, Ambassador Caroline Banda from the Future Africa Leaders Foundation (FALF) inspired members of the Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner. She introduced FALF, outlining its core objectives, mission, and the many opportunities it provides to young change-makers across Africa. Banda encouraged the youth to unlock their innovative potential, take bold action, and join a movement that recognizes and supports emerging young leaders on the global stage.

Speaking on behalf of the youth, Vice Chairperson Rachel Mwale expressed gratitude for the valuable insights and inspiration gained. She called on all young people in Kasungu and nearby communities to unite in addressing the challenges facing their communities and to work together for a healthier, more promising future.

Also in attendance was District Condom Coordinator, Mr. Charles Zosachinja, whose presence highlighted the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration in advancing youth empowerment and health.

Leave no young person behind — the future is now!

Advancing Youth Health & Igniting Bright Futures!

In our continued commitment to uplifting young people and sparking positive change within our communities, yesterday we held dynamic group discussions centered on PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) a vital strategy in HIV prevention. The session was skillfully led by one of our dedicated Youth Community-Based Distribution Agents (YCBDA), Asam Draft, who guided participants through meaningful and eye-opening conversations.

Following this, we hosted critical reflection sessions to review the recent visit by Newa's Youth-Friendly Health Services team on June 7, 2025. During that visit, we engaged in various collaborative activities with fellow youths learning, sharing, and growing together.

Our review focused on the valuable experiences and skills gained, and the incredible milestones we've achieved in advocating for youth health and rights. Together, we are challenging and dismantling harmful cultural practices that put young people at risk, including early marriages, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), early pregnancies, and other barriers to a healthy future.

This is more than just a program, it’s a movement to empower, protect, and elevate our generation. Let’s keep pushing forward, united by purpose and powered by hope.

Linda Nyirenda, the focal person at Newa Health Center, has raised concern over how certain outdated customs and traditions are putting immense pressure on young people, especially girls who are being forced into marriage while they are still children. This is often driven by the belief that early marriage can bring immediate financial benefits to their families.

Nyirenda explained that some parents push their daughters into early marriages in order to receive livestock as dowry—treating it as a short-term gain. However, this practice has devastating consequences on the future of these children.

“A child ends up living a difficult life while the parent has already accepted dowry. That child is left wondering, ‘How can I leave a marriage when my parents already took the cows and spent them?’” Nyirenda said.

Uniting for Change: Kasungu & Newa Youth Take a Stand!

Young people from Kasungu District Hospital Youth Corner joined forces with peers at Newa Youth Friendly Services in a powerful exchange visit focused on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

The event brought together passionate youth determined to tackle issues like teenage pregnancies, STIs, school dropouts, and other challenges affecting their future. Through open dialogue and health talks, participants shared experiences and solutions, proving the strength of youth-led action.

A key takeaway was the urgent need to address harmful cultural practices, such as zinamwali, which continue to put young people at risk. Youth leaders and health stakeholders stressed the importance of collaboration between young people, community leaders, and decision-makers to build a safer, more informed generation.

Held at Newa Health Center in T/A Chisinga, Kasungu, this event was more than a visit, it was a bold step toward sustainable change and empowerment.

Together, we can protect the future of our youth. Leave no young person behind!
