RESETTING Part 2
Challenges with Resetting and How to Overcome Them
Resetting, whether in personal life, professional endeavors, or organizational strategy, if handled correctly, is and can be a trans-formative process. However, this process often comes with challenges and as leaders, it is imperative that we understand the challenges that we may face during the process and be intentional about dealing with the challenges as they arise.
In this post we look at some of the important challenges leaders find themselves dealing with and how to overcome the limitations when RESETTING:
1. Resistance to Change:
• People may feel attached to old habits or fear the unknown. Others may also feel threatened with the prospects of losing some benefits due to the resetting process
• Dealing with this should involve effective communication, communicating the benefits associated with the change, starting small, providing support, and seeking guidance. In as much as possible, acquire buy-in from the most of the concerned stakeholders
2. Lack of Clear Direction:
• Uncertainty about where to start or how to set meaningful goals due to the ambiguities associated with the vision or the plan for resetting.
• Dealing with this should involve reflecting and assessing, setting SMART Goals, and seeking guidance. At this point, it is key that the process of resetting must be consultative and the focus on its objectives must be maintained.
3. Emotional and Mental Fatigue:
• The resetting process can feel emotionally draining or overwhelming especially where the process is complex and lengthy.
• To address this challenge, leaders should involve practicing self-compassion and patience, prioritizing well-being, and celebrating small wins. The key is to set clear actionable tasks with milestones and also making sure that the team stays motivated by addressing any issues that may arise.
4. Lack of Resources:
• Insufficient time, funds, skills, or tools to implement changes.
• In most cases, leaders deal with the challenge of limited resources and in order to deal with this, managers must firstly engage in resource planning, seek support whether from within or engage in resource mobilization drives, and be innovative in their approaches.
5. Fear of Failure:
• Often times, resetting exposes individuals and teams to new ways of doing things or even their own weaknesses due to prior training or orientation. With this, Fear of failure usually creates hesitation and sometimes tension.
• In order to effectively deal with this, leaders need to have the skill of re-framing failure which is the ability to view and make others see that the failure is an opportunity to learn and not a set back. They must also plan for contingencies while focusing on growth.
6. External Resistance:
• Opposition from stakeholders, peers, or team members who prefer the status quo.
• Dealing with this should involve engaging stakeholders, addressing concerns, and building consensus.
7. Impatience with Results:
• Unrealistic expectations for quick outcomes and frustration when progress is slow or invisible.
• To deal with this, leaders need to set realistic targets, timelines, monitoring progress, and staying committed to the process.
8. Complexity of Change:
• The resetting process may involve multiple layers, making it overwhelming to manage. In most organizations, resetting affects processes, relationships, systems, and even short term results. And in order to manage this challenge, leaders must engage in the following:
- Simplify the Process: Break down the reset into smaller, actionable steps.
- Focus on the most impactful changes first.
- Use Tools and Systems: Leverage organizational tools to manage complexity effectively.
Clearly, the Resetting process is not child's play. It can be highly transformative if handled correctly, by addressing challenges proactively ensuring that the effort leads to meaningful and sustainable outcomes. In addition, emphasizing patience, planning, and a solid support systems is key to overcoming obstacles and achieving success.
