I started my Pilates journey over 20 years ago...!

I have hip and back problems that I started having physiotherapy on when I was about 12, and into my teens and 20s.

I've had pretty serious ankle and shoulder injuries, and seem to have a weakness down my entire left arm because of that shoulder injury.

My physiotherapist, in my early 20s, mentioned Pilates and told me to look into . I found a VHS and her book and went from there.

There were no classes, that I could find, in Bristol where I was living at the time, and I didn't find one anywhere else in the UK that I lived over the next few years.

Once I moved back to Malawi, I met a lovely yoga teacher, Seema, and at her studio was a Pilates instructor called Donato, who led classes there 3 times a week, and at a nearby school. I signed up immediately, fell completely in love with Pilates and never looked back.

Donato was due to leave Malawi and encouraged me to find a way to become a Pilates instructor, luckily a friend of mine has married the lovely and I talked to her about running a training course in Malawi, which she did.

I redid my training with her during covid lockdown, and have also completed other specialist trainings, including (but not only) pre and postnatal Pilates (and yoga), and women's health.

This is where I find my own power, through my passion for Pilates, where I've used it to help my own body to heal after injuries, after pregnancy and birth, and I believe I have helped prevent my injuries from being worse by harnessing movement and building strength and stability around joints.

I am continually learning, from physiotherapists, from other Pilates teachers, deepening my own understanding and knowledge so that I can do my best for ALL bodies.

This evening, Pilates at Channel View Leisure Centre we will focus on footwork and balance with a lovely long stretch session.

Tomorrow for Pilates at JD Gym Cardiff Central and PureGym Western Avenue we will be working on backs, shoulders, obliques and of course core. We'll finish with a lovely 15minute Pilates stretch.

Have you recently had a baby?

It doesn't matter if you carried a baby 6 weeks ago, 6 months ago or 6 years ago, this is designed for you.

I am Tanya, a Pilates and Yoga teacher and Perinatal Doula, specialising in women's health, specifically around pre and postnatal wellbeing.

Combining all of my different trainings, and understanding of the time constraints around trying to find time to yourself after having had a baby, I've created a short series of postnatal Pilates, available on demand on YouTube.

After selling out my 6 week course on Zoom 4 times over, I've found that the hardest part for new mums is being available to join the live classes each week at a specific time, and most mums were using my videos in their own time rather than being able to attend live.

To make things easier for you, I've turned my popular course into a YouTube series.

Each class combines pelvic floor work, help for healing diastasis recti, and is broken down into 4 parts, so you can focus on the area you need to that day, or do each 15 minute section in little bits when you can.

I am also available for support and 1:1 classes if you want a more personalised experience.

This lovely lady, Joy Whitlock , has been a regular in my Wednesday morning yoga classes, and despite having been in pain and struggling with her hip through the time I've known her, has continued to show up on the mat weekly.

She's now got a shiny new hip, and after less than 2 months is back on the mat! Not to mention that she's also walking, cycling and swimming.

Keep moving Joy, so good to have you, and your amazing energy, in class again 💕
